surrounding them, the rankings also provide enormous benefit to golfers, many of whom are avid list-compilers and collectors. We love to tick another Top 100 entry off our list of courses played and then ponder them with our friends. It takes us to new and fascinating places that sometimes we would not otherwise consider. We also benefit because the rankings provide inspiration to all clubs and keep those in the upper echelons on their toes; they cannot afford to rest on their laurels. Currently thirteenth in the Top 100, we here at

Royal Liverpool are blessed with a course - and indeed a club - that ticks so many of the criteria boxes. I for one will be fascinated to see where Hoylake is placed in the next Golf Monthly Top 100, which will be published at the end of 2010.
