EXPERT OPINION Recruitment
“I need a regional manager who will really manage, how do I get the right person and is it just money that motivates them?
Andrew Deverell-Smith replies:
F
irstly I believe there are many factors that affect whether a candidate is likely to be effective. For me, the size and scale of the operation in
question is of importance. Are we talking about dozens of branches and a multi- million pound turnover business or a small cluster of offices within a confined location? Without wishing to sound pedantic, I would also question what is meant by “really manage”. Would this person have budgetary control? Are they effectively permitted to ‘sign cheques’? Or would you be expecting them to implement decisions made by you?
The role Regional Manager tends to only
exist in a fairly corporate Estate Agency. As a result, it is highly likely that our search would involve looking for people who have worked within a similar environment performing a similar role. In terms of answering your question of
finding the ‘right person’, this very much depends upon the nature of the role and the culture within the company. We would advise you to undertake a thorough review of the role, expectations of the individual, budgets, ambitions for the business, lines of communication etc, before beginning your search. By undertaking this process,
you will begin to paint a very clear picture of the ‘right person’, thus making the identification process easier. Furthermore, at interview stage, you
will have a far clearer picture in your mind of what you’re looking for and be able to describe the role and future opportunity more accurately. Is it just money that motivates people?
Not at this level in my experience. Yes of course money is important, but it’s likely that applicants will be looking for future scope to evolve, potential equity or share options, a benefits package, and quite simply the challenge itself.
