Sheila Evans educates through CDs
By Patrick Keating
CHRONICLE STAFF WRITER
Former Detroiter Sheila
Evans, who now lives in New York, has a production compa- ny called Mustard Seed Audio, which she established in 2002. She produces CDs to provide supplemental education.
Among the CDs she’s pro-
duced include the Mentor Series, the first edition of which features attorney Cor- nelius Pitts. That CD — which consists of discussion between herself and Pitts about becom- ing an attorney; mentors and role models; his inspirations; skills for a lawyer; managing money; and other topics — is designed to help young people who think they’d want to be a lawyer.
To date, she has one other
Mentor Series CD, a profile of Patricia Leonard, the first Black customer relations representative for British Air- ways.
Another CD she’s produced
is called “A New Understand- ing of Peace” which she co- wrote with Lynda Jeffries, with music by Tony Rich. It consists of spoken word com- mentaries about peace, prayer, and related issues.
Evans said the idea for
the “New Understanding of Peace” CD was inspired in part by a visit to someone in a hospice who was watching a soap opera. She said it didn’t seem like the right material for someone in that situation. It contains selections from the Psalms.
The CD also includes a
moment of silence among its 15 tracks. She said people have no idea how difficult it is to find silence in so many areas.
“It’s just not part of our cul-
ture anymore, and yet there’s richness in that silence,” she said. “You can hear yourself think.”
Evans already had a prod-
uct out called “The Literature of the Harlem Renaissance; as well as a product called “Paul Robeson, the Actor”, which she did with Paul Robeson, Jr. She said “The Literature of the Harlem Renaissance” is designed to help those who know nothing about the Harlem Renaissance “go from 0-90 in less than 30 minutes.”
Evans took the name mus-
tard seed from the parable of the mustard seed as related in the Gospels of Luke, Mark and Matthew. She said her mother came up with that name in 2002, soon after 9/11.
“My money job is in travel
and tourism, and so it came to a screeching halt,” she said. “But when I got into travel and tourism, I saw immediately that student travel was very important.”
Evans would love for the
Mentor series to eventually incorporate interviews with people from all walks of life. Among those she’d like to feature includes her father-in- law, a Chrysler retiree.
She also said Mustard Seed
Audio was also designed to help strengthen listening skills. She emphasized that there’s nothing wrong with the world being so visually- oriented, but believes learning to listen in a very important skill. She said she wrote her thesis on listening.

• Lake Superior’s lake trout bag limit has been increased to five fish daily in zones MI-4, MI-5, MI-6, MI-7 and MI-8, east of the Keweenaw Peninsula.
