If you are at risk of losing
your home to foreclosure, there is help.
In 2008, Wayne County
launched its Mortgage Fore- closure Prevention Program (MFPP). To date MFPP has helped 1,500 Wayne County families, saved over 500 homes from foreclosure and worked- out another 200 dignified exits for homeowners.
“People face default for
many reasons,” said Jamele Hage, director of the MFPP. “It could be because of a job loss, a reduction in income, a cata- strophic medical condition. MFPP is able to help people at any point in the process and there is no charge to you for this service.”
Wayne County Executive
Robert Ficano directed his staff at the Department of Technology to design a pro- gram that would help resi- dents who are at-risk of losing their homes to remain in their homes which in turn would help stabilize neighborhoods and communities.
Hage said when a home fore-
closes and becomes vacant, re- search shows that the value of homes within 10 blocks drops on average 1.4 percent. As va- cancies increase home values in the area drop to levels that destabilize blocks and neigh- borhoods.
“It is a no frills, hard work-
ing, problem solving program,” said Ficano. “It’s making a dif- ference in people’s lives.”
The program’s success has
been spotlighted on “Dateline NBC,” CNBC, “The Nightly Business Report,” WXYZ-TV and recently caught the at- tention of White House. Last year, it won an award from the National Association of Coun- ties. Cities around the country like Las Vegas and Houston have expressed an intense in- terest in the program.
Mortgage foreclosures in
2009 topped 65,000 for Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washt- enaw combined.
Last month, with the help
of the United Way of Southeast Michigan in collaboration with the Southeast Michigan Re- gional Foreclosure Interven- tion and Neighborhood Stabi- lization Collaborative (FINSC), a new on-line web portal was launched to provide MFPP to residents in Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties.
In addition, homeowners
can also dial a newly expanded 211, an information and refer- ral service which links hom- eowners with vital services related to home foreclosure prevention.
Mayor Bing
solicits Detroit for census
ambassadors
With the 2010 Census effort
already under way, Mayor Dave Bing is calling on Detroit resi- dents and community orga- nizations to assist in raising awareness of the Census by serving as Detroit Counts am- bassadors.
These volunteers will en-
courage residents to fill out and mail back their Census forms during neighborhood walks on Saturday, April 3, Deployment from West and Northwest NCH.
“We need to come together
to make sure ‘Detroit Counts,’” said Mayor Bing. “The Census brings critical funding to our city and ensures that Detroi- ters’ voices are heard in Lan- sing and Washington.
Serving as an ambassador
gives Detroiters an opportuni- ty to truly help in this effort.”
The City of Detroit hopes
to recruit at least 1000 volun- teers. The ambassadors will place door knockers if resi- dents are not home.
Residents who have mailed
back their forms will get lawn signs.
Because of the nature of the
Census, volunteers will not be allowed to handle Census forms or discuss personal information with residents. Volunteers will arrive at their meeting location at 9 a.m.and receive instructions and mate- rials. Ambassadors will begin canvassing around 10 a.m.
The neighborhood walks
will conclude with a number of community events on Sat- urday, April 3.
To volunteer, individuals
and community groups should call (313) 628-0737 or (313) 224-7157.

“We are excited to offer
Southeast Michigan residents an easy, trusted source to help them avoid mortgage foreclo- sure,” said Mike Brennan, president and CEO of United Way.
Ficano said he was excited
to provide the technology so the foreclosure prevention service could expand to Oak- land, Macomb and Washtenaw counties.
“This is a great example of
what we can accomplish with regional cooperation and col-

THE MICHIGAN CHRONICLE
Wayne County’s Mortgage Foreclosure Prevention Program goes regional
laboration.” At the web-portal roll-out
last month, Oakland County Treasurer Andy Meisner said that home foreclosures were not an isolated problem. “It’s in all our communities. No community is immune to this crisis. No community.”
Also on hand was Detroit
City Council President Charles Pugh who was a client in the MFPP. He’s lending his name and recognition to help get the word out. “I’m a strong advo- cate for the program. It works.
