SMALL WONDERS
Caereinion High School in Powys beat Llanishen High School in the fi nal of the Boys Under 18
competition to take the title of Minute Maid Welsh Schools champions after extra-time and a
4-1 victory in a penalty shoot-out.
Gareth Griffi ths, Caereinion’s coach, commented, “It is a great achievement from such a small
school, we are the second smallest in Powys. We’ve all worked really hard this year and it’s an
excellent reward.”
Ysgol Brynrefail took on Barry Comprehensive in the fi nal of the Boys Under 16 competition
and scored a 3-0 victory.
Phil Holland, coach for Ysgol Brynrefail, commented: We lost in the fi nals at U14’s last year, so
I’m delighted to be back on the winning team this year.”
Ysgol John Bright beat Fairwater High School, Cwmbran 9-0 in the fi nal of the Boys Under 14
competition, with hat-tricks from Robbie Parry, Brian Roberts and Dean Seager.
Dave Sweet, coach, was delighted with the win: “This is the fi rst time we have reached the
Minute Maid Welsh Schools Cup fi nal and we’re delighted to be taking the trophy back to
Llandudno. If we can take forward our performance today to the UK Championships next
week, then I think we’ll have a chance of winning that as well!”
Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen were victorious over St Cyres School in the fi nal of the Boys Under 12
competition by 4-0.
Llanidloes School won the Girls Under 16 competition, beating Ysgol Gyfun Penweddig 4-1
victory to take the title of Minute Maid Welsh Schools champions for the third consecutive
year.
Richard Williams, Llanidloes’ coach, was delighted with his team’s performance, “This is an
amazing result for us. As well as celebrating this title, we can now celebrate a hat-trick of
titles, having won this competition for the past three years!”
Greenhill School took on Treorchy Comprehensive in the Girls Under 14
competition, winning 3-1.
Sian Bennett, Greenhill’s coach, commented: “This is the fi rst year that these
girls have played as a team, which makes their achievement in winning the
national fi nals an even greater achievement – I could not have asked any more
from any of them.”
Prestatyn High School beat Gowerton School 6-0 in the Girls Under 13
competition, champions for the second year.
Over 180 schools and colleges entered the Minute Maid Welsh Schools Cup
in June last year, with 17,000 boys and 4,500 girls competing in the regional
rounds of the event from September to January. Over the last three
months, the winners and runners-up from each region have been battling it
out for a place in the Finals and the opportunity to showcase their talent in
the National Finals.
