DURING THE WINTER MONTHS northern
latitude Ultimate players traditionally move
indoors. But more and more people are
becoming convinced that low temperatures are
not an obstacle to excellent frisbee.
Here are our top reasons for preferring
outdoor winter Ultimate:
1. Fresh air. Outside air quality is generally
better in the winter than in hot weather, while
the air inside of gymnasiums can be stagnant
and dusty.
2. Sunshine. People in cold climates don't get
enough sunshine in the winter. We need
more Vitamin D3 (produced in skin exposed
to sunlight).
3. Painless layouts. Landing on a cushion of
snow is a big pleasure for anyone who likes
to lay out.
4. Fewer injuries. Snow protects against injuries
by cushioning falls. It also reduces running
speeds and consequently makes collisions
safer.
5. Builds tolerance for cold weather.
6. Stay in shape for the beach season. Running
on snow is a lot like running on sand. Only
better.
7. Unlimited playing surface.
8. It's free. Renting a heated gym or dome can
be expensive, but it's easy to find Ultimate
fields outside in the winter.
9. Disks last practically forever. It's always a
pleasure to play with a brand new disc. But
discs never stay new for long when they are
used inside. In the snow, discs retain that
"brand new" quality for years.
10. Extreme, but safe.
If you are still not convinced, then think about
Planet Earth. Playing Ultimate indoors requires
that a huge multistory airspace be constantly
heated. Winter Ultimate aficionados understand
that it's not necessary to burn profligate amounts
of fossil fuels to stay warm, we can use our own
