Technology in Music Education
This issue’s feature section includes lots of practical, “classroom
tested” ways to include technology in your teaching including us-
ing Garage Band as an assessment tool, using an interactive white-
board in the music classroom, and fun ways to use computer tech-
nology with your elementary students. Be sure to check out Stan
Nickerson’s article on converting your lps and cassette tapes to
MP3 files!

How do YOU use technology? Do you have a favorite professional or “kid friendly” website? Is
there a technology “gadget” you can’t live without? Share your technology tips with your col-
leagues!
“I use an IPod for all the music in the classroom music that I teach. The series I use has CD's and
I've put all of them on there, a lot easier to carry than a boombox and cases of CD's. I have an inex-
pensive set of portable speakers that allow for pretty decent sound without a lot of hassle. I can also
record my students when they are singing so that we can podcast within our district-kids can practice
and I can assess more easily what kids are singing.
When I teach recorder, I also use overhead cameras and projectors on the whiteboards and screens so
everyone in the classroom has a great view of the music that I'm using. No one's looking down at
their desks to read music. They have better posture, and I can more easily check hand position and
fingerings.”
