The atmosphere is decidedly unique for a horse show, and
perhaps it is so because of Menlo’s mission of philanthropy.
As its formal name suggests, the show donates all revenue
to the Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
Over the course of the show, Menlo has donated upwards
of $3 million to the Vista Center.
Nan Chapman has also been a part of the Menlo Horse Show since its beginning. She chairs the PR for the
show, and has traced its evolution from “a little circus club family afternoon horse show,” to the magnificent
event it is today. From its original local horse show form, she explains, it was updated to a C show, and then
gradually added days as its popularity grew into an AA show.
Menlo is held at the gorgeous Menlo Circus Club, which prides itself on being a family club and contributes
to the special aura the show seems to have. The private club is open to the public only during the show, which
lends a stately and elegant feel to the competition.
Those who attend and compete at Menlo insist that it is different from other shows. Chapman claims that
