Page 2 NAIDOC WEEK DEBATING CHALLENGE
During NAIDOC week, three of our senior debaters travelled to Forbes to compete in the annual NAIDOC Week Debating Challenge, sponsored by the Lachlan Catchment Management Authority. The topic for the debate was The Tent Embassy: To Keep or Abolish.
Beth Johnstone, Kieren Murray & Blade Atton were excited to attempt to defend their 2011 win. They had the opportunity to debate both sides of the topic against Forbes High School. Adjudicators noted that the debates were incredibly close and were particularly impressed with the depth of knowledge from both teams and their evident preparation. After this difficult competition, the adjudicators decided to award the debating trophy to Cowra High School.
Congratulations and thank you to Beth, Kieren & Blade for their hard work and participation. As the winners, these students have been given the opportunity to participate in a larger debating competition in Dubbo later this year.
COWRA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER NAIDOC WEEK LUNCH
When the last newsletter was prepared, NAIDOC Week activities had not been completed. Following the NAIDOC Showcase Concert, the next day saw the first ever NAIDOC lunch held at the school for community Elders. This was well attended and very well received by the Elders, with many eagerly looking forward to the next one. The new PD/H/PE portable was transformed into a dining room and superbly decorated. Particular thanks goes to Ms Corey and her Year 11 Hospitality class who prepared the soup, main course and dessert for the occasion ~ a particularly fine effort given that it was the day of the teachers’ strike, when most staff and all other students were not at school.
A big thank you goes to Cowra Services Club and Cowra Rotary who sponsored
the lunch. NAIDOC Week
finished up on the last day of term with a free BBQ, stews and curries for all students, face painting and traditional Indigenous games ~ thank you to Mr Carpenter and his Girri Girri students for running the games.
NAIDOC Week 2012 was one of the best ever held at Cowra High. Particular thanks go to the Aboriginal programs staff of Robyn Coffey, Joanne Williams, Letetia Harris, Harry Lambshead & Rod Eastwood who worked very hard to ensure the success of all activities. Congratulations to Year 11 student, Jyedn Murray, who took out the Junior Mr NAIDOC title at the community event held at the Golf Club during the holidays.
