COWRA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER BREAKAWAY PROGRAM NEWS

Recently the students from the boys and girls

Breakaway Programs joined together for an exciting initiative which involved the students interviewing a number of local Aboriginal community Elders. The Elders who attended were Cameron Bamblett, Agnes Coe, Susan Dunn, Jan Grey, Frances Kennedy, Beryl Smith & Neville Williams. The students asked the Eders questions such as about their families, memories of growing up, their experiences of schooling & favourite bush foods. The students found talking to the Elders very interesting, amusing & sometimes very sad (such as memories of being a child taken from their parents). The students and Elders shared a further bond and chat over morning tea. Thank you to Year 10 students Abbey Bull & Jemma Boundy who attended to film the interviews, with the Elder’s permission.

NSW BEEF SPECTACULAR 2012

On Tuesday 13 March, 11 Cowra High students departed the school for another year of heated competition in Dubbo. Once we arrived at the showground we had to unload, wash & feed the cattle.

Wednesday morning we woke at 5am, ready for a day of competition. After

preparation done with the cattle it was time to test out our skills. Coota Park Blue Efficient, led by Stevie Farrell- Hutt, was entered in the heifer competition and made it to the final heat and ended up placing fourth in the finals ~ this was a great job by Stevie and she did well for the team.

Thursday morning was very relaxed as we ate breakfast and packed up the campsite. We attended the showground for the last time, which gave everyone a chance to relax and watch the breeders’ heats. It was great to sit back and watch experienced handlers compete and learn the ‘tricks of the trade’.

This year’s trip was a great success, with everyone being able to show off their new cattle handling skills and having an excellent time. With seven of the eleven students competing for the first time they should be very proud as they had a standout performance and we hope to see their faces again next year.

Students who attended were Brodie Farrell-Hutt, Ethan Willis, James Kitchingman, Kalin Farrell-Gray, Lochlin Crosher, Will Hazell, Daniel White, John Robson, Josh Dunk, Stevie Farrell-Hutt & Tisharna Peters.

On behalf of all the students who attended the 2012 NSW Beef Spectacular in Dubbo, we would just like to say a huge thank you to Ms Kellie Farrell-Hutt, Mr Brad Dunk & Mr Don Garling for giving up their time to get us to the show and support us throughout the process.

The Cowra High School cattle team, would like to give a special thanks to Jonathan & Harvey Wright of Coota Park for supplying the cattle for another year. This trip would not be possible without their generosity
