DUBAI.

SPLURGE: There are 50 malls in Dubai and counting – Mall of Arabia opens at the end of the year with more than 1,000 retail outlets. Until then, among the best is the new Dubai Mall, which has more than 1,200 stores including a Bloomingdale’s and a 41,000 sq m fashion avenue dedicated to haute couture, making it the fashion capital for the region. It also has the largest indoor Gold Souk in the world, with 220 jewellers. There’s a luxury hotel within the mall too, The Address Dubai Mall. Mall of the Emirates (also home to Ski Dubai) boasts a Harvey Nichols store and the mall is undergoing an expansion programme.

SAVE: The shops at Ibn Battuta Mall are friendlier on the wallet than most, and Tuesdays bring with them a range of discounts and special offers. For a change from the ubiquitous high-street stores and luxury labels, suggest a mooch around Souk Al Bahar in the Downtown Burj Dubai area, or Souk Madinat Jumeirah. The souks of old Dubai – such as the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk – are the place for real bargain hunters who want some good-natured haggling. Travel 2 can organise a fairly thrifty break, with five nights at the Ibis Deira City Centre from £529 per person.

Citadines self-catering studio or apartment. Each comes with cooking facilities so going self-catering means more funds for shopping – and Citadines offers commission to agents. Or, for discounts on big French and international labels, suggest a trip to La Vallee Village. Part of the Chic Outlet Shopping group, the “village” is 35 minutes outside

NEW YORK.

SPLURGE: Staying at The Peninsula puts high-end travellers in the heart of the retail action on Fifth Avenue, home to the leg- endary Tiffany & Co and FAO Schwarz, as well as department stores Bloomingdales, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and Henry Bendel. But also worth a look is Madison Avenue for stores such as Barneys, a favourite of Sarah Jessica-Parker’s, which offers a complimen- tary personal shopping service. Trendy types should hit Soho (recommend a stay at 60 Thompson or SoHo Grand), while splurgers might like the New York Palace’s Girls Weekend (from $549 per night), which includes an appointment at Saks Fifth Avenue to create a Sex And The City-inspired look, a manicure and cocktails in the hotel’s glamorous Gilt Bar.

SAVE: Canal Street is a street-market style treasure trove of handbags, watches and sunglasses. For brand lovers on a budget, Century 21 department store is worth a look. For some out-of-town retail action, recom-

mend Woodbury Common Premium Outlet, 45 minutes outside Manhattan; pre-book a trip there via Attraction World (from £33). The centre has 220 stores ranging from Gap and Nike to Jimmy Choo and Chanel. Visitors also get a discount coupon book when buying a transportation package or booking with most UK operators.

SINGAPORE.

SPLURGE: Last year the city completed an £18 million rejuvenation programme along Orchard Road and three new malls opened – ION Orchard, Somerset Central and Orchard Central. Keep an eye out for this year’s newest arrival on Orchard Road: Knightsbridge is an impressive 83,000 sq ft luxury shopping destination integrated within the former Park Hotel Orchard which will be re-branded as the five-star Grand Park Orchard in July. In the meantime, The Fullerton is a good designer tip, with its team of Shopping Concierges and exclusive flagship boutique of Ashley Isham, who counts Angelina Jolie, Kylie Minogue and Victoria Beckham as clients.

SAVE: Bargain hunters should head to Chinatown for its endless nick-nacks, t-shirts, silk stores and herbal shops. Plus, it’s home to many tailors who can run up bargain suits. It’s also easy to come away with armfuls of stuff from Little India without having to spend too much. Serangoon Road is the heart of the area, where shoppers can get spices, sari fabrics, flower garlands, jewellery, brassware and silverware. Also in Little India is Sim Lim Square – the place to go for electrical gadgets and gizmos. The new Ibis Singapore on Bencoolen is a good-value recommenda- tion in the area. The Great Singapore Sale happens annually from May 28 to July 25 and is packed with discounts.
