Beauty in the back

Some of Canada’s lesser-known regions are hoping to attract more UK holidaymakers thanks to new flights, tours and packages. Rob Gill reports

ATLANTIC CANADA.

The four Atlantic coast provinces (New-

foundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island) have been on a marketing drive in the UK in recent months as part of the Atlantic Canada Tourism Partnership. The region has already been boosted by Air Canada’s new daily summer flights from Heathrow to the Newfoundland capital of St John’s. The maritime area is very different from the rest of Canada and is perfect for clients who enjoy self-drive or coach tours into the great outdoors without hours of road travel. Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island are easily combined in one trip, while Newfoundland is more remote but closer to the UK.

The main attractions include great scenery (particularly around Newfoundland and Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island), whale and bird-watching, seafood and the Bay of Fundy’s spectacular rock formations. Prince Edward Island is best-known for its many golf courses and being the setting for

the classic book Anne of Green Gables.

MANITOBA.

The central Canadian province is best-known for its polar bears, which can be seen on tours from the northern town of Churchill. These trips are featured by many of the major operators to Canada.

However, tourism body Travel Manitoba wants to show the region has more to offer than just polar bears and will be in the spotlight when the province’s capital, Winnipeg, hosts this year’s Rendez-vous Canada show from May 8-12.

The province will become more accessible from the UK in June, when airline Iceland Express begins flights to Winnipeg from Gatwick, via Reykjavik. As with much of Canada, Manitoba’s attractions revolve around wildlife and the great outdoors – aside from the iconic polar bears, visitors can also marvel at white beluga whales and more than 100 species of birds. Manitoba is an obvious destination for animal lovers but it’s also good for those looking for a wilderness adventure
