weddings & honeymoons knowledge
A
fter checking in, all the guests
were either reading or whispering
to each other, and we wondered if
we had walked into a library or
monastery by mistake. I’d never heard of
Relais du Silence before, but I was beginning
to get an idea of what it stood for.
In fact, us Brits must be a noisy bunch,
as there are only two Relais du Silence
properties in the UK but hundreds through-
out Europe. This type of peaceful location
was just what we needed after a busy week
sightseeing in Florence.
Splendid isolation
Set in a remote hilltop location, the hotel is
a mixture of converted farmhouses scattered
around an 18th-century noble house and
medieval cloister. As a result you have
plenty of nooks and corners to hide yourself
away in with a book, or enjoy a glass of
Chianti while enjoying the views. Rooms
(some with thin walls) are fairly simple with
a rustic charm. The main social activity
centres around the pool, where some guests
spend entire days entranced in a pattern of
reading and taking siestas.
