Can you walk into
business travel?
Leisure agents looking for opportunities in the lucrative but recession-hit corporate travel
sector must be able to stand out from the crowd and prove their worth. By Martin Ferguson
A
fter the terrorist attacks on
September 11, 2001, the business
travel sector slumped into
temporary decline and scores
of experienced and talented staff left the
industry.
When the economy recovered and entered
the boom period between 2005 and 2007
travel management companies were winning
more accounts than they could deal with.
There was a worrying skill shortage and
recruitment companies could not find
enough candidates to fill the available roles.
However, as the current recession put
the brakes on corporate travel, so the
opportunities for those looking to work
in the sector shrunk.
“The situation has changed so quickly in
18 months,” confirms Barbara
Kolosinska, C&M Recruitment’s
business development
manager. “It used to be a
client-driven market but now
it is entirely vacancy-lead.”
Before the economy crashed in
the last quarter of 2008, TMCs
had been looking at leisure
travel consultants, luring
them with the promise of
higher salaries and better
working hours as they sought
to plug the skills gap.
