The agent winners of last year’s ttgbusiness
Awards were treated to a weekend break in the Big Apple
last month thanks to British Airways, Jumeirah Essex House
and NYC&Co. The seven winners – Shelley Garner and
Janina Zachopolous-Butler of Carlson Wagonlit Travel;

Solutions’ Katie Fordrey and Fiona Goldsmith – met at
Shelley Garner and Janina Zachopolous-Butler,
Heathrow T5 in BA’s business lounge before flying to New
both Carlson Wagonlit Travel
York in the comfort of the airline’s new Club World seats.
A cold and wintry New York greeted the gang as
temperatures plummeted to an unseasonably chilly
-17°C (-27°C with the wind chill). But a champagne
reception in the hotel’s Presidential Suite – with its
stunning views across the whole of Central Park and
uptown Manhattan – soon warmed them up.
Dinner at Patsy’s, a traditional Italian restaurant and
Fabienne Groisil-Wren and Faith
Frank Sinatra’s favourite, was courtesy of NYC&Co, and
Padmore, both Chambers Travel
was followed by a few drinks back at the hotel.
Dinner at South Gate Restaurant
On Saturday, the agents had a site visit of the hotel, and
learnt about Jumeirah’s new promotions for the UK trade
including the ‘One Night Makes a Difference’ campaign,
which earns agents 15% commission on minimum two-night
bookings, with the traveller earning a free night at any
Jumeirah property in London, New York or Dubai. Agents
can also take advantage of Jumeirah’s 50% off the best
available rate promotion (see
ttgbusiness.com for details).
Simon Barnett and Mark Ryan, both
The agents, three of whom had not visited the city
Jumeirah, with Katie Fordrey, FCm,
before, spent Saturday sightseeing and doing some serious
and Janina Zachopolous-Butler, CWT
shopping, then it was back to Essex House for a delicious
dinner at South Gate, the hotel restaurant. Late night
drinking and pool continued until the early hours at the
nearby Whiskey Bar. On Sunday the team was up early for
more shopping and sightseeing before transferring to JFK
in the afternoon – and back home.
The hotel’s general manager Scott Dawson admitted the
market was tough but it was important to showcase the
hotel to corporate agents. He said the hotel was putting
out tactical rates to attract the corporate market, which has
fallen by about 10% in the past few months. He predicted
that recovery would begin in the first quarter of 2010.
