ince it first opened to civilian air traffic in 1951, the story of Cologne Bonn Airport has been one of growth. The facility has three
runways and two terminals and a catchment area of 17 million people living within 100km of the airport. In 2015, 87,711 flights carried 10.3 million passengers, an increase of 9.4% year on year and the first time the airport broke the 10 million mark since 2008. Further growth of 8% is predicted for 2016 with 11.2 million passengers expected. Cargo is also forecasted to grow from an all-time high of 758,000 tonnes in 2015 to 760,000 this year. While Cologne Bonn Airport currently has 26 airlines
offering 130 destinations in 45 countries, the route development team is still keen to introduce more. Routes to Mauritius, Boston and Miami are being launched in 2016, and the airport is targeting more long-haul growth. Intermodal connectivity has also been key to the airport’s success with an InterCity-Express (ICE) train station and long-distance bus terminal on site, meaning travellers can easily continue their journeys overland. Nor has any of this been achieved at the cost of
quality. In 2016, Cologne Bonn Airport won Europe’s Best Regional Airport at the Skytrax World Airport Awards for the third year running – proof indeed that strong growth can go hand in hand with high quality and good service. £
