She has been involved with providing the necessary provisions to
comply with the McKinney-Vento Act since its inception, helping build the program from the ground up, seeing it as “her baby.” Washoe County spans more than 6,400 square miles. Te district has 93 schools with 63,000 students enrolled. For this school year, according to Medeiros, there are roughly 400 homeless students in pre-K through 12th grade. Te longest distance one of these students is bused to their school of choice is 30 miles. Te district partners with a number of after-school organiza-
tions, like the Boys and Girls Club, to provide a safe space for these students to receive tutoring and dinner before the school district buses them home for the evening. Te program has a dedicated router in order to utilize the busing resources available to accom- modate these children. Medeiros works closely with the district’s Children in Transition
program. CIT provides homeless children with assistance in procur- ing supplies, nutrition and health services and summer school. It also provides van service to and from school for up to three days, until Medeiros’ staff can get the student onto a bus route, a transit bus pass or reimbursement for the student’s parent for transportation. “This is an issue that’s growing each year,” said Medeiros.
“Providing these kids with the resources they require is really a team effort.” l
