drupa cube partnership to spur out-of-the-box thinking
Four months prior to the start of the drupa 2016 trade show on May 31, the programme for drupa cube, the conference and event
location, is now largely set. The primary partner for development and delivery of content is international firm The Medici Group and its founder and CEO, Frans Johansson. Worldwide brands such as American
Express, IBM, Nike, Volvo and The Walt Disney Company have already been drawing on the strategic expertise of The Medici Group. Now drupa is doing the same. “With The Medici Group, we have
precisely the right partner at our side for drupa cube,” said Sabine Geldermann, director at drupa. “A consistent approach to change management is absolutely necessary to master the challenges in the print, packaging and media sectors. “I’m extremely pleased that we will be
presenting a high quality and clearly structured programme that will appeal both to the print and media industry as well as to
web agencies, brands and print buyers, with The Medici Group and other impressive thought leaders at its core.”
In his opening keynote speech on May 31, bestselling author Johansson will base his talk on the drupa theme ‘touch the future’. The following keynote sessions will build on this and explore key situations where one can forge a route to a future vision. Across the 11 days of the event, there will be a mix of five sessions: Business evolution, technology, intersectional, and C-Level. The strategic and creative design of the event programme and on-site implementation has been entrusted to London, UK-based brand experience agency FreemanXP. A provisional programme will be online this month; the complete programme is scheduled to be online in March. Participation in the cube programme is free of charge for drupa visitors, included in the daily ticket price of €65 (or € 45 for the online ticket).

UK paper industry in favour of staying
in reformed EU The Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) has issued a briefing to UK MPs in which the CPI director general set out the case for the UK remaining in a reformed European Union. David Workman stated that the position of the UK’s papermakers, converters and recyclers is in favour of the UK remaining within a reformed EU. The future of UK papermaking relies on continued capital investment, and a strength of the EU for the industry is the ability to trade across borders. Should the UK leave the EU, it would cast doubts over free movement and regulatory frameworks. Exporters would still have to comply with a host of EU regulations and standards, and papermakers would be projected into a period of uncertainty. This is the type of business environment that deters investors, putting in jeopardy the 25,000 direct and 100,000 indirect jobs in the paper supply chain in the UK.
This being said, reform to the EU is not only overdue but essential, Workman said. EU officials legislate in isolation regardless of the consequences to European industry, placing burdens and restrictions on industries such as paper, particularly in relation to environmental, energy and climate change measures. The UK Government is not entirely blameless either, having signed up to the most challenging climate change targets than any other EU country.
A successful year for BST ProControl
BST ProControl looks back on a successful 2015; the company, specialised in the quality control
and measurement of flat materials, decided to close its subsidiary in Rengsdorf, Germany, immediately at the beginning of 2015. All employees were transferred to the BST ProControl headquarters. The decision to concentrate solely on the location in Wenden, has proved to be the right move. Since all the teams operate now under one roof, they were able to optimise their processes and facilitate the communication between the different departments. The company reported that this is one of the main reasons for the sales increase of 30 per cent during the last few months. The

economic success has been obtained also by using the existing synergies, which are given due to the allegiance to BST eltromat. BST ProControl was even able to exceed its business goals set for 2015. There were many joint projects throughout the year contributing to the company’s success. BST ProControl was also able to expand its
back office. The 24/7 service hotline is also used more frequently by customers; as a result, the company provides an interface between customers and in-house technicians. The company expanded its portfolio in the field of non-radiometric sensors by responding to a market trend that is set to secure a good order position in the upcoming year.

Whether the UK remains within the EU or not, a more level playing field is needed for Energy Intensive Industries (EIIs) across Europe, the report said. We need to be operating under the same regulatory regimes as other EU countries. Failure to act will result in the loss of even more capacity. The UK’s Paper Industry lost a massive 20 per cent of its capacity in 2015 and our country is now the largest importer of paper anywhere in the world. Workman commented: “The debate on our membership of the EU will undoubtedly intensify over the coming months but we would urge Members of Parliament to recognise that the challenges for Energy Intensive Industries in the 21st century will be enormous and that we genuinely believe that we are in a better position to face them from within a reformed EU.”
