FEATURE Reel & Roll Handling Functionality and ease-of-use a winner
Established in 1981, Dotec’s reel and roll-handling range, marketed under the name Lift Assist, includes rotary
action roll handlers (horizontal to vertical and reverse) and single action (horizontal or vertical), both types having a capacity of 50–250kg. In August last year, contact between Synergy
Health (UK) and Dotec was established via systems and equipment supplier Jarshire, Dotec’s exclusive UK and Ireland agent. As a result, Dotec was invited to consider a customised system at the Synergy Health facility in Chorley. The handling capacity required by Synergy Health fell exactly between two existing Dotec roll handlers; the RH90 being considered too light and the heavier RH200. Dotec subsequently designed a new roll handling and crane system that provided a complete answer for Synergy Health, but also complemented its own portfolio. Designated the RH140, the new model is designed for multi-functional roll handling applications up to 140kg in the packaging and labelling markets. After discussing its handling requirement and considering the Dotec proposal, Synergy Health paid a visit to Dotec’s factory in Holland for a tour by Dotec’s Wouter Verhagen and David Smith from Jarshire. After a demonstration of multiple roll handling equipment, Synergy Health decided to move forward with its project. “The staff were impressive and during demonstrations you could see first-hand the functionality and ease of using the lifter,” says production manager at Synergy Health, Darren Gaunt. This visit engendered further enquiries for handling equipment that highlighted the Synergy Health confidence in Dotec. After discussing multiple solutions, an onsite visit at Synergy Health was
paid jointly by Dotec and Jarshire. In mid-December the new handler was ready for an acceptance test and Synergy Health delegates experienced the RH140 on a newly- designed jib crane for the first time. A week later, installation and full operator training was undertaken. “It is the ease of use that the staff find most beneficial,” Gaunt adds. “To lift the weights that we are using in production is effortless for both the staff and the lifter. The machinery Dotec has produced is first class.” “The equipment benefits us in many ways; the ease of handling and speed at which we can make changes is proving a major benefit bringing about cost savings through higher efficiency. Also, a reduction in roll damage caused during manual operations, and ticking all the health and safety boxes are both massive benefits.” T: +44 (0)1753 825122 /

Allowing you to try before you buy
STS Bespoke Handling Equipment is a UK handling equipment manufacturer of
bespoke solutions and a range of standard products developed over the years. STS is a specialist company in solving roll handling problems and its unique designs are driven
by the customer’s requirements. The company is willing to offer the majority of its UK product sales on a sale or return basis. This enables the customer to check the suitability of the design before agreeing to purchase. This reflects the STS desire to ensure the customer receives a solution to their problem and to work with the end-users beyond the initial enquiries. Technical sales director, Colin Jones, says: “STS is unique in that we can develop a unit from concept to on- site trial without the customer committing to the purchase.” An initial enquiry to the company is followed by an outline proposal. A site visit by the company’s technical engineers is then arranged to look more closely at the application, gather data and discuss options with the end-users. Concept drawings for consideration and approval move the proposal forward to manufacture for trial. Following initial customer contact and site visits, STS produces a fixed

price proposal for the unit for the customer decide to purchase it after site trials. If the price falls within the customer’s budget for the project, it then produces 3D Solid Model CAD drawings to help the customer evaluate the proposal.
After this, the product is manufactured and delivered to the site for a week’s trial and the customer has the opportunity to purchase the unit or have it collected. If the unit is collected, no charges are made to the customer, not even for delivery. Jones adds: “This sounds like a risky strategy for STS but it all depends on how good the units are. In our experience if you solve the customer’s problem they always want to purchase the unit.” STS prides itself on creating units that are
safe, efficient and versatile and the brand is recognised for this by its customers. All products are fully compliant with CE Directives, the Manual Handling Regulations and ATEX Directive if required for use in hazardous zoned areas.
