FEATURE Carton & Board
Combined carton and insert requires fewer components
Platinum Press, one of the leading suppliers of healthcare packaging solutions for the
pharmaceutical, medical device and animal care sectors offers Combination Carton, a combined carton and insert whereby the insert is consolidated into the carton itself. A window on each carton makes inserts visible for quality assurance inspection. Since fewer overall packaging components are needed, the carton/insert combo significantly reduces manufacturing costs by increasing line speeds and diminishing machine downtime. To guarantee a quality and accurate product, every insert and carton is electronically scanned and inspected to confirm a match. “Combination Carton is the ideal solution to combine printed leaflets with a carton,” said Andrew Vale, senior VP of corporate strategy and development for Platinum Press. “Consolidating two or more printed components to reduce complexity has many benefits: increased line speeds, reduced down-time, and improved overall packaging efficiency and effectiveness.”
HP reflects on its developments in the corrugated sector
Converter speaks to worldwide printing machine manufacturer, HP, about its work in the carton and board printing industry:
At the Interphex pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device solutions exhibition in April, the company will also showcase its 266-panel outsert, which allows for an expanded number of panels that, in turn, yields a significant increase in copy space for necessary product information and instructions. As a result, the need for a ‘twinsert’ or piggybacked outsert is often eliminated. The 266-panel outserts are on average 20 per cent thinner than traditional outserts and help to save on production, storage and shipping costs. These are easier to handle both manually and mechanically, and easily fit into existing packaging solutions.

Next-generation compliance packaging
Last year, worldwide retailer, Walmart, introduced the latest generation of compliance packaging into its pharmacies across the USA. The Ecoslide-RX 2.0 from Keystone Folding Box Company offers a host of upgraded features that
enhance user-friendliness, including redesigned lock/unlock functionality and enhanced graphics providing more dynamic user instructions. The package passed Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) protocol testing for
child resistance and it demonstrated a high level of senior friendliness and was also reported by patients to be ‘easy to open’ in consumer testing. “With Ecoslide RX 2.0, the overall consumer experience has been improved: the opening
procedure of the new package is more intuitive, and minimal effort is required to unlock the package,” said Ward Smith, director of marketing at Keystone Folding Box Company. “Enhanced graphics present operating instructions that are easily understood – a benefit particularly to seniors, who comprise a significant percentage of prescription medication users. Major pharmaceutical manufacturers are expressing strong interest in this package.” Many compliance packages offer day-of-the-week calendars for each individual dose, which has been shown to increase patients’ likelihood to adhere to medication regimes. Ecoslide-RX 2.0 allows for
large, easy-to-read text type on all sides conducive to clear, simple opening instructions. The compliance pack is also easy to stack in medicine cabinets and convenient to transport, with less risk of contamination from dropping or spilling.

What’s new for HP in the carton and board sector? “HP already offers a wide range of digital printing solutions for diverse corrugated packaging applications, from basic short- run corrugated to high-quality packages and merchandise displays. These digital solutions open up a wealth of opportunities. “One of HP’s most recent developments is
the introduction of the first HP PageWide Web Press T1100S, co-developed with KBA, which reinvents corrugated packaging printing for high-volume, digital pre-print applications. With Multi-lane Print Architecture (MLPA), the Web Press T1100S creates an immense paradigm shift in the production of corrugated board. HP MLPA splits the web into multiple print lanes, so different jobs, with different box sizes and run lengths, can be printed in the individual lanes. Coupled with all the advantages of digital printing, this allows cost-effective customisation and personalisation of corrugated packaging, meeting the demands for shorter print runs without having to create inventory. Corrugated converters can now print only what is needed.”
What does the future hold? “Digitally printed corrugated packaging is emerging fast, and it is up to converters to deliver the shorter runs, faster turnarounds, increased design options and higher print quality that brands and retailers are now demanding, which HP is well equipped to provide. As demand for more impactful and cost-effective packaging grows and run lengths and turnaround times shrink, it’s clear that we need to start looking beyond traditional production methods. The corrugated packaging market is ready for digital transformation, and HP are already leading the way in this area. “A key focus for HP is of course gearing up for another exciting drupa year ahead, demonstrating our commitment to this core industry event by investing in the largest vendor space at the show. We look forward to unveiling our latest digital print innovations to the drupa audience, and global print industry at large.”
