FEATURE Flexible Packaging Concerns over wastage levels

Clondalkin Flexible Packaging (CFP) is an international producer of high value added flexible packaging for the food,

dairy, beverage and personal care markets. Roy McAdoo, the company’s chief commercial officer, looks at one of the recent innovations at CFP that is helping to address growing concerns over food waste. “Food waste has become a hot topic because of its environmental implications and helping to reduce food waste is a priority for many packaging manufacturers, Clondalkin included. According to a European Commission study released last year, more than 100 million metric tons of food was wasted in the EU during 2012. “At CFP reducing both food and plastic waste is a high priority and we invest heavily in research and development.” Over the last two years the company has developed its WENTOPRO-SkinTight film as it noticed that the requirements for this skin tight packaging grow year on year in a number of markets and regions. This film has now been launched and CFP expects

there to be a strong demand as continuous advancements are made in this area. Its popularity is largely due to the diversity of food types it can be used to pack, including fresh, frozen and processed foods, such as meat, poultry, fish, seafood and cheese. This invisible film surrounds the product like a second skin, providing a safe and secure seal that prevents contamination and leakage. But more importantly the barrier properties of the film guarantees a longer shelf life, helping to reduce food waste. “Customers like it, not only because it keeps food fresher for longer but because it's user friendly with an easy peel corner and maintains the natural appearance of the food inside, thus keeping it aesthetically appealing,” continues McAdoo. “Flexible packaging solutions like this are on the increase and an important factor in the overall drive to reduce food waste and ultimately lower carbon dioxide emissions. As a packaging manufacturer we have to consider the impact of our products across the supply chain. For example the materials used in flexible packaging are much lighter

than others, which means lower transport costs and lower carbon dioxide emissions. “We also have to consider what happens when our packaging is thrown away, which is why we engineer packaging solutions that are recyclable wherever possible. “A lot more needs to be done around tackling the issue of food waste and it's something that we're committed to doing at CFP. We will continue to focus on developing sustainable packaging solutions which offer functionality and convenience.”

Startling research published last year showed that the UK has topped a poll on which country

wastes the most food in Europe. This unfortunate accolade follows research carried out by waste recycling and waste management service, ReFood, and it highlights what is becoming a growing concern amongst consumers and businesses. According to Government statistics, 7.2 million tonnes of food and drink is thrown

away in the UK every year - the majority of which could have been eaten - collectively costing the consumer £12 billion per year. Furthermore, the national food industry waste is estimated to cost £5 billion per year. As part of the effort being carried out to

reduce food waste, tesa, one of the global leaders in adhesive tapes, has developed a packaging solution, tesa Lift & Reseal technology. This high-tech tape was created for the effective re-closure of flexible

packaging and is now in use around the world, with major retailers and brand owners specifying the system on a wide range of products and pack sizes, from small, high value snacks to economy budget products. The tape strip remains adhesive all the way down as the packaging reduces in size and remains effective even if the adhesive face becomes dusty, thus retaining the quality and freshness of the items and reducing wastage. Referring to the benefits of tesa Lift & Reseal, Peter Spencer, tesa’s specialist segment manager manufacturing, said: “Where other tapes provide limited reclosure, tesa Lift & Reseal is designed to efficiently close packs more than 20 times. “The issue of food waste is obviously not just confined to the UK; European Parliament has established its own targets and the EU Commission has set out a resource efficiency roadmap, which foresees a 50 per cent reduction in food waste, to be achieved by 2025. With our tesa Lift & Reseal product being fast adopted worldwide, we are hoping that we can play a part in helping to deliver these targets.”
