I RECENTLY READ A QUOTE THAT STOOD OUT TO ME FROM JOHN SPERAW, OUR U.S. Men’s National Team head coach. He was talking about the team’s gold medal last September at the FIVB World Cup. Going into the tournament, the primary goal for the team could very well have been to finish in the top two, which is what was needed to qualify for this summer’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. But John said this: “I think a lot of people come to this tournament and just want to get to

the Olympics. I really wanted to do more. I want this team to set its sights on gold medals at every tournament. Whether we win or lose, I want full commitment to that endeavor to see what we can learn.” What resonates with me about John’s

words is his dedication – and the team’s – to striving for more than just the base line. And it occurred to me that this statement could also summarize USA Volleyball’s commit- ment to every one of its members. With each new year, we want to provide you with a little more of everything, whether it’s tournaments, clinics, education in all aspects of the game or simply the enjoyment of watching our top indoor, beach or sitting teams compete for medals on the world stage. On that note, let me congratulate the

U.S. Women’s National Team, which is ranked No. 1 in the world and locked up an Olympic berth on Jan. 9 by winning the NORCECA Olympic Qualification Tourna- ment in Lincoln, Nebraska. With our men’s and women’s indoor teams qualified and both sitting teams qualified for the Paralympics, this will likely be the first time since 2004 that we have filled every possible Olympic and Paralympic spot. (The beach qualifications won’t be completed until June 12, but it’s a good bet we’ll secure all four available to us – two men’s, two women’s – since our teams will be chosen from a field full of proven champions, including three-time Olympic gold medalist Kerri Walsh Jennings, Beijing gold medal- ist Phil Dalhausser and London silver medalist April Ross.) It’s interesting to note that much of our success at the national team level has roots in our High

Performance program. In fact, 13 of the 14 players on the men’s World Cup roster came through USAV’s HP pipeline. Going forward, we are committed to finding more and more ways to connect USAV’s HP juniors with the senior level athletes and national team coaches. That’s exactly what we did in December when we held a girls’ national prospects training block in Anaheim, where promis- ing juniors in our pipeline trained side by side with our women’s national team and got instruction from coach Karch Kiraly and his staff as well as motivational speeches from the players. Another growing USAV program is the Junior Beach Tour, which puts on tournaments across

the country for boys and girls ages 10 to 18, many in cooperation with our USA Volleyball Regions. Last year, we had our biggest numbers ever – 8,600 participants in 70 events – and we fully expect to top that this year. Visit USA Volleyball’s website for a JBT schedule. There are already 55 events locked in, and many more will be added between now and the season-ending Junior Beach Tour National Championships July 22-24 in Milwaukee. No discussion about bigger and better volleyball opportunities would be complete without a

mention of USAV’s grant programs. Every year we provide funding to help our regions across the nation that are committed to creating and improving their programs to train young players, teach coaches and officials and inform and educate parents. All disciplines of the game – indoor, sand and sitting – receive these grants, and each year the amount increases. These are listed on our website at http://www.teamusa.org/usa-volleyball/grassroots/grants. The website has lots of information on all the programs I’ve mentioned and many others. Check

them out when you get a chance. No matter what goals you’ve set in volleyball, we’re here to help you achieve them – and enjoy yourself along the way.
