THE UNITED STATES WOMEN’S NATIONAL TEAM WILL HAVE TO defend its FIVB World Grand Prix title in a pool with some of its major rivals in the last major test prior to the 2016 Olympic Games. The U.S. Women will host a round of the 2016 World Grand Prix prelimi-
nary round at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Team USA is ranked number-one in the world by the FIVB, while Japan is
ranked fifth, Turkey is ranked 10th and Germany is ranked 11th. “It is always a treat and blessing to play at home,” U.S. Women’s National
Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly said. “We have been extremely fortunate the last three, and now fourth year in a row, to be able to play in front of our American fans. Not only are we fortunate to play on U.S. soil, we get to play in Southern California – the closest to our host city of Anaheim that we’ve competed in an international tournament, which we hope to use to our advantage. We’ll also be competing near our many supporters here in Southern California who make it possible for us to train here and have our year-round training facility with our official host city of Anaheim.” The World Grand Prix, with 12 teams competing in Group one in three
preliminary weekends prior to the Finals being held in Thailand, will serve as the last major event for teams qualified to the 2016 Olympic Games. “This is the one event all teams use to prepare for the Olympics,” Kiraly
said. “All the teams entered have big hopes of qualifying for Rio between now and the FIVB World Grand Prix. This is a great opportunity for people to see up close the work and dedication they have been supporting all through the Olympic cycle. We hope by then we will have reached our goal of qualifying for Rio, and that this becomes a chance for our home fans to cheer us on one more time before the biggest event of Olympic quadrennium.”
