NEW – Accurate 3V/5V digital
temperature sensor M
MS Electronics has available a new range of digital temperature sensors from Smartec. The SMT172 is an
ultra-low power, fully calibrated, high accuracy digital sensor. Using the most recent advances in silicon temperature sensing technology, the SMT172 has applied sophisticated IC design techniques and high-precision calibration methods, to achieve an absolute inaccuracy of less than 0.1ºC (mode 1) and less than 0.25ºC (mode2) in the range of -10ºC to 100ºC. Full temperature range is - 45ºC to 130ºC. The sensor operates with a supply voltage from 2.7 to 5.5V. The typical active current of only 60uA, high speed conversion over 4000 outputs per second (room temperature) and extremely low noise, makes this the most energy efficient temperature sensor in the world. The SMT172 has a pulse width modulated output signal, where the duty cycle is proportional to the measured temperature. The sensor can connect directly to a Micro- processor without an Analog-to-Digital Converter. The SMT172 replaces the SMT160-30.

ensitron Technologies, a supplier of electronic displays to the industrial marketplace, announces that it has been acquired by London AIM listed Quixant plc, a company specialising in the design and manufacture of computer solutions and monitors for the global gaming and slot machine industry. Densitron, which has over 40 years of history as a provider of advanced display solutions to industrial customers,
will continue as a
DENSITRON acquired by QUIXANT plc D
separate subsidiary of the Quixant plc group. The merger enables Densitron to immediately extend its product range to include larger display formats and monitors as well as embedded computer solutions. Quixant has a strong Taiwan operation focused on design, manufacture and quality control which will enhance the capabilities of the existing Densitron Taipei facility. Grahame Falconer, MD of Densitron Technologies Ltd, stated: “The acquisition by Quixant is a very exciting development for Densitron. Quixant is a successful and dynamic company that will enhance Densitron’s future growth plans in the display and embedded solutions marketplace. Its design and manufacturing expertise and operation in Taiwan will strengthen our business and result in significant benefits to our customers.” Nick Jarmany, CEO of Quixant plc, stated: “Densitron’s addition to the Quixant group brings a wealth of experience and expertise in selling complex display and electronic solutions to the global industrial market. Densitron has a highly professional sales network with local presence in all the major regions. Quixant will be working to leverage its strengths to help Densitron accelerate its growth into the future.” New branding will be announced shortly that preserves the powerful and well established Densitron name but identifies the link to the Quixant plc group. A new and enhanced Densitron web site will also be launched in January as part of the planned growth of the company’s business in its key marketplaces in Europe, the United States and Asia.

Low Pressure Sensor for Reliable Measurement
R
OTRONIC has expanded its measurement parameters still further with the introduction of a low pressure sensor with analogue output for controlling processes as well as other applications.
The Rotronic BF220 absolute pressure
transmitter with piezo-resistive steel sensor, robust stainless steel body and ½ ”G fitting is ideal for pressure measurement in neutral gases and nitrogen in piping and closed vessels. The transmitter is particularly suitable for applications with fast temperature changes and in compressed air lines, HVAC and pneumatic systems.
The
transmitter has a measurement range of 0 - 10 bar and specified accuracy of 0.25% full scale; the protection rating is IP65. For compressed air monitoring systems Rotronic can also offer a high precision low dew point sensor (Rotronic product code HC2-LDP).

ZEMIC strain gauges added to Variohm EuroSensor product range
V
ariohm EuroSensor has added ZEMIC strain gauges to its comprehensive range of sensors and transducers. The range covers a very wide selection of standard strain gauges as well as special purpose and customisable versions that suit use for high precision transducer applications, hostile environments, wide temperature variation and more. Standard strain gauges are encapsulated in Constantan foil with phenolic-acetal backing and, with self-temperature compensation, are available in a variety of patterns and materials for research and industrial stress measurement. Versions with paper-based acetal backings are also supplied for use in composite materials or cement structures. Special purpose strain gauges include Karma foil gauges with glass-fibre reinforced polyamide backing which have excellent heat-resistance and excellent insulation characteristics. Within the special purpose range, waterproof and submergible versions are available for use up to 50 bar (5 MPa).

Inert Gas Blanketing in Solder Reflow Ovens
s the use of electronic communication devices increases, so does the demand and expectation for quality and reliability. At the heart of these devices lies the PCB (printed circuit board). For the production of PCB’s, the reflow soldering process is the popular choice of manufacturers. Quality is further improved by introducing the use of nitrogen within the oven to create an inert atmosphere. Nitrogen gas blanketing reduces the risk of oxidisation and increases the reliability of the product. The inert atmosphere within the oven is maintained by the use of a gas analyser capable of measuring ppm (parts per million) of oxygen. The analyser detects any residual oxygen, then sends a signal to the PFC (proportional flow control) valve to supply additional nitrogen as required.
