feet of arch pipes and syphons and carried, for the time, a rela- tively high boiler pressure of 240 psi. The rear high-pressure cylin- der measured 23 inches in diam- eter with a 32-inch stroke. The front low-pressure cylinder was 39 inches in diameter with a 32- inch stroke. They had a tractive effort of 101,300 pounds. The USRA ordered 106 stan- dard 2-8-8-2s. In addition to the 45 assigned to N&W, Baltimore & Ohio got 26, the Clinchfield got 10, and the Virginian received 25. However, the Virginian had re- fused the first five and these went

to N&W, making its total 50. All the railroads receiving the USRA 2-8-8-2 were coal haulers, and the locomotive was well suited to hauling coal with its high tractive effort and flexible front engine. After the war, N&W bought 75 copies of the USRA heavy 2-8-8- 2, 30 in class Y3a and 45 more in class Y3b, which were later reclassified as Y4. The Y3a was virtually identical to the USRA locomotive except that it had a larger tender. The Y3s as built had the air pumps mounted on the smokebox front. Over time, the Y-3s received a different boil-
er with 30 fewer tubes but more superheat and a firebox with 65 square feet of arch tubes. They also received a Worthington feed- water heater that was mounted on the left side of the locomotive. This necessitated moving the air pumps to the right side to balance the weight of the feedwater heater. The drawing appears to be a com- posite of the Y3 and Y3a as it has the class designation Y3a but a Y3 number. Apparently, N&W added the same style tender, originally applied to the Y3a, to the modern- ized Y3s, making the two classes indistinguishable.
Refused; to N&W as 2000-2004 REMARKS Rebuilt to EL-5 class 2-8-8-0
