Snake Canyon Railroad Hauling freight on the CRAFTSMAN/Bill Schaumburg
We build layouts for a variety of reasons, but some are more important than others. For Cliff Bishop, his reasons are to en- joy the Santa Fe running through New Mexico’s dramatic moun- tain scenery, for operation, and to provide opportunities to socialize with friends. Filling a 27x30-foot space, and with a 12-track, 3x17- foot staging yard in an adjacent room, the HO-scale Snake Can- yon Railroad fulfilled these goals with a busy double-track main line and monthly operating ses- sions for more than a dozen years. ner of Iowa, nowhere near Cliff’s home in Cedar Rapids, but the Santa Fe is still his favorite mod- eling subject. He traces this back to when he was six years old and saw models of the road’s F-units. The red-and-silver Warbonnet scheme stayed with him. That famous paint scheme, and later watching AT&SF trains wind their way through the stunning scenery of the Southwest, made it easy to decide what to model. It also gave his railroad a slogan, the Serpen- tine Route. Inspired by the Santa Fe, it represents a secondary main line that twists and turns through northern New Mexico’s mountains
