ules, the author describes the signal cir- cuit connections for most track patterns. Rather than describe a typical layout and show signal configurations for that layout, the author illustrates most track configurations and presents the signal arrangement and signal rules. Creating a signal system becomes a straightforward procedure of interconnecting the three el- ements of each block with other blocks included by the signal rules. As an exam- ple, consider the left (east) signal at the connection of blocks 3 and 4:
• Red if block 4 is on • Yellow if block 5 but not block 4 • Green if block 3 or 6 is on but not block 4 or 5
These rules are implemented in the OR-NOR circuit wiring. When approach mode, tumbledown and opposing traffic are incorporated, the rule list becomes longer but still manageable. In addition to single-track configura-
tions, other arrangements are detailed, including passing siding signals, turn- out indication, single-ended sidings, branch lines, crossings, and automotive
traffic crossing signals. More complex configurations, such as a crossover, can be implemented by combining several of the illustrated configurations. Not lim- ited to signal circuits, track control cir- cuits including turnout control, reverse loops and wyes are presented that are DCC compatible. Illustrated in the final section are
track control circuits that the author indicates are not DCC-compatible be- cause they remove power from the track. These circuits are for direction control, collision avoidance, and cross- ing collision avoidance. For those considering implementing
the author’s circuits, the Appendix is a treasure trove of information divid- ed into two sections: trackside sensor circuit information and circuit board construction. The sensor circuit sec- tion presents specification and details to build and align the sensors, while the construction section shows board layout and provides a website to obtain PCB foil patterns, specific component lists, and even purchase PC boards. thing to critique!) Even if you decide not to use the au-
thor’s three electronic modules, the book has value by the inclusion of the rules for each of the signal/track con- figurations. These can be adapted to the user’s favorite system. It’s not a book with glossy photographs, but it is packed with all the details and informa- tion needed to construct a working sig- nal system. The book is available from Amazon (
www.amazon.com) at the in- troductory price of $13.99. If you like the smell of hot rosin core solder in the morning, this is the book for you. — JOE ALTNETHER
