Rittal’s latest message - ‘Prepare your panels now and be ready for next summer’ - is highlighting the importance of getting expert advice, and planning and putting in solutions now, so you are not caught out by rising ambient temperatures. “I cannot underline how important it is to choose the right product. Climate control is not a one size fits all solution, and its success depends greatly on the local environment,” said Christian Westwood, Rittal’s product manager for climate. To help, Rittal is able to provide free advice on which cooling product is suited to a particular application, or will arrange a survey so it can propose the best solution. Fan-and-filter units may be adequate for enclosures which are located in a cool and clean environment, given a single device provides more than 4kW of cooling in

ideal conditions. If the air is dirty, it is still possible to take full advantage of low ambient temperatures by using energy efficient air-to-air heat exchangers to provide any necessary cooling. For applications that require the temperature inside the enclosure to be lower than that outside it, a refrigerant based solution may be the best option. Products available from Rittal

include the new Blue e+ cooling unit range, and air-to-water heat exchangers can be used in even hotter conditions. www.rittal.co.uk

PCB DESIGN TOOL IMPROVES COMMUNICATION BETWEEN ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL DESIGN TEAMS

A new PCB design tool powered by Altium has been added to New Technology CADCAM’s product portfolio. PCBWorks is created specifically for collaboration with mechanical designers using SOLIDWORKS, and includes a number of features to link design data between electrical and mechanical environments. Keith Smith, technical director, commented: “Cross discipline design

has always been a challenge – how can we collaborate with both electrical and electronic engineers, without translating files between the various departments and CAD packages? Many of our customers already use Altium Designer, which is considered to be one of the best PCB design solutions on the market, but until now there hasn’t been an easy way of integrating any PCB board designs into the mechanical 3D design packages such as SOLIDWORKS. This is essentially what PCBWorks will allow you to do. It has been written specifically for integration and collaboration with SOLIDWORKS and has a very intuitive interface, which makes it easy for our customers to get collaborating with it immediately.” Lawrence Romine, director of global new business development at

Altium, added: “PCBWorks provides the perfect balance of integration, uniting two traditionally separate design worlds together. We’re still allowing the electrical and mechanical specialists to do what they do best in their own workflows, but now there’s a common link that ties their design processes together.”

PROFISAFE USER WORKSHOP A SUCCESS

PROFIBUS, PROFINET & Murrelektronik have teamed up to host a PROFIsafe user workshop. The workshop brought together both device and component manufacturers as well as machine builders, with 120 participants in attendance. Alongside presentations, there

was an interoperability live demo that displayed the functionality of PROFIsafe, discussions on safety versus security and the latest

information about implementing machine guidelines. The workshop also featured a micro trade show which allowed manufacturers to engage with machine builders in a new setting. “The community is in focus today

– first of all with the manufacturers displaying a large selection of devices and secondly, with many new innovations in the safety technology area. Both of these trends emphasise that we are the leading safety standard,” said Xaver Schmid, PROFINET workgroup leader. www.murrelektronik.com
