Workforce Reductions Affect Tennessee and Kentucky
CSX announced in mid-October it would reduce operations at its Erwin, Tenn.,
facility on its ex-Clinchfield
Railroad mainline. Erwin’s locomotive service center, car shop, and switching operations are all affected. The decision will also eliminate all run-through traffic on the Elkhorn City, Ky. to Spartanburg, S.C., mainline. Instead, rail traffic will be routed across adjacent mainlines, including
the former Lousiville & Nashville route in central Kentucky and the former Chesapeake & Ohio mainline in Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia.
The decision to reduce operations on the 275-mile Clinchfield route will affect about 300 positions in the company. Employees received at least 60 days of pay and benefits, and those affected will have opportunities to relocate to other places on the system. CSX
has also made significant
workforce reductions at its Corbin, Ky., mechanical shops on the old L&N in an effort to evaluate network resources in relation to industry demand. The decision to close the shops has affected about 180 positions. The yard will remain open and train operations will remain unaffected, according to the railroad. Operation of the 2015 Santa Train continued as planned over the former Clinchfield Railroad route. CSX spokesperson Melanie Cost said there are no plans to discontinue the Santa Train in the future, despite the cutbacks at Erwin and overall reductions elsewhere. Each year CSX provides substantial support for the Santa Train includingpersonnel, equipment, logistics support, and gift bags.
Intermodal Facility New Pittsburgh
Construction began on a new CSX intermodal rail facility in McKees Rocks, Pa., near
Pittsburgh at the
end of September. The railroad has committed more than $60 million to the project, which will enable greater access to western Pennsylvania shippers. The facility is expected to open in 2017 and is located on property formerly owned by the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie.
Last Chance to Ride Behind WM No. 734?
This may be the final season to ride behind No. 734 as the locomotive approaches its mandatory teardown and inspection date. Built in 1916 for Lake Superior & Ishpeming as No. 34, the Baldwin-built 2-8-0 was acquired from Illinois Railway Museum in 1991. It was released for service after an extensive rebuild in 1992 as a credible representation of a typical Western Maryland steamer. While No. 734 is out of service, Western Maryland Scenic Railway is working to restore Chesapeake & Ohio 2-6-6-2 No. 1309 in time for the 2016 excursion season.
