New Cab Cars for Toronto GO Transit

GO Transit train No. 913 arrives at Aldershot, Ont., led by new Bombardier- built cab car No. 304, on its second day of revenue service on October 15, 2015. The $200 million order for 67 new coaches was first announced three years ago. Assembled at the Bombardier plant in Thunder Bay, Ont., production began in 2014 and the first examples arrived on the property at the end of May 2015.

BNSF 600, 604, and 608 have also been completed and are en route to General Electric’s plant at Fort Worth, Texas, for weighing, measurements, and inspection prior to being released to service. Other units from the 600 series have been sent to Amory, Miss., for storage and potential conversion to AC44C4Ms. The six-axle SD70ACe4s that were

built with four traction motors (BNSF 8500-8519) have not seen much use on BNSF. The locomotives arrived on the system in October 2014 but have seen precious little revenue service since February. Several units have been shipped out for performance modifications, presumably to add traction motors to power all six axles. During September, BNSF received

54 new ET44C4s from General Electric, including 3937, 3938, 3954, 3956, 3958, 3961, 3965-3972, 3974-3998, and 3839- 3853. Several trains are getting pairs of the new locomotives, and an isolated number of trains have been seen with three or four of the new units.

Corporate Espionage Alleged in Lawsuit

Highlighting the sometimes intense competitiveness between its two largest rail systems, a corporate espionage lawsuit has been filed by Canadian National in Canadian courts alleging that a former employee shared sensitive customer information with rival Canadian Pacific. In the $2 million lawsuit against CP and the former CN (and now CP) employee, Greg Shnerer, CN alleges he downloaded confidential

information, including

customer contracts, pricing information, and corporate business plans with the intent to solicit clients of CN and attempt to increase market share. Although court documents filed by

CN do not specifically indicate which customers’ information had been taken prior to Shnerer’s departure from CN on July 3, 2015, it is alleged that an ex- employee viewed and saved sales reports from other CN sales teams, then deleted the files, while sending other proprietary files to personal e-mail accounts before deleting those. Statements of claim also indicate this ex-employee accessed three customers’ contracts outside that individual’s area of responsibility and communicated with Derek Ackford, who is believed to be Shnerer’s supervisor at CP, at least 12 times by telephone and 40 times via text message. Canadian Pacific is led by E. Hunter Harrison, formerly CN’s chief executive officer, who enticed former CN executive Keith Creel in 2013 to join CP as chief operating officer. Sometime after Creel joined CP, both Canadian rail carriers reached an agreement that would prevent CP from recruiting high-level CN officials and, in exchange, CN dropped legal actions against CP over executive departures.
