THE COVER DATE ON THIS ISSUE reads “December” and, depending on where you live, that means snow can’t be far away. Here in northwest New Jersey, the snow season can start as early as Halloween, although more typically we see our first sticking snow sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas; snow can fall into early April. The last few years have seen either feast or famine when it comes to snow in this area — I judge a winter based on the number of times I have
to shovel the sidewalk, which typically is about seven times per season. Three years ago I had to shovel only twice. Two years ago I was shoveling twice a week for the first two months of winter. Last year saw record-setting snowfall
in the Northeast; before heading out on a Carl Franz photo special on the Strasburg Rail Road in February I removed a foot of snow on Thursday to be ready for a Friday departure, only to have another foot of snow
