a nice colorful accent to the shot. And finally, dress in warm layers. Trains
don’t always show up when we want them to, and that can result in a lot of standing around on cold surfaces in unpleasant conditions. Keep your feet and head warm, and you’ll be ahead of the game. With proper preparation (and some basic knowledge of how your camera works), the winter season can be very enjoyable. Send us your results! — S.B.
Along the Rails 2015 Did you get trackside with your camera
in 2015? Did you capture something rare, interesting, or scenic? If so, you might consider sharing your photos with our readers in our annual “Along the Rails” photographic year in review. This special PHOTO LINE will appear in our March 2016 issue. This year we’ll be accepting slides and
The time from the late-1950s
until the mid-1990s were years of transition and decline of the SP’s influence in the west;
however, the photographs and extended captions presented
here emphasize the railroad in its former, healthy condition. With 223 photographs by
45 photographers, Southern Pacific: Sacramento Division presents a thorough look at
SP’s mainline and branchline operations from Dunsmuir to
Fresno, and from Sacramento to Ogden. The presentation illustrates the dramatic geographic and geologic
conditions through which the Southern Pacific’s various Sacramento Division lines were built, from pastoral
farming land, to deserts, to rugged mountains.

digital images, and you’ll have the option of uploading your photos to our FTP server instead of mailing them. The rules are simple — any photo of any rail subject can be submitted, as long as it was taken in 2014. Each photographer can submit up to ten photos for consideration. For those of you with slides, we strongly recommend you have them scanned and submit them digitally. If you do not have a scanner, you’ll have to hire an outside slide scanning service. If you want to submit your original slides, put the slides in a 20-slide sheet (even though you are submitting ten or fewer). Enclose caption information on a separate sheet of paper. You must include a valid email address for correspondence or you will not be considered for publication. Package everything up securely and send it in. Digital photos can be submitted as TIFs
or uncompressed JPGs. Images should be at 300 d.p.i. and be at least nine inches across the long dimension (2700 pixels across). You can check image size in programs such as Photoshop. Photos can be adjusted for color and contrast, but should not be otherwise enhanced (i.e., don’t add or subtract any features that were not present when the photo was taken). Send us the entire image and leave any cropping to us.
Digital shooters have a couple of options for submitting their images. The “old” way is to put your images on a CD and mail them in. Also put a Word or text document on the CD with caption information and make sure each caption is keyed to the file name of each photo. You must include a valid email address for correspondence or you will not be considered for publication. All CDs will be disposed of after the feature is printed. If you want to submit your images electronically, send an email to
editor@railfan.com. We’ll send you instructions on uploading your images to our FTP server. Upload the images and a Word or text document with caption information and you’re done. The deadline for submissions is January 12, 2016. For those mailing slides or CDs, send your package to our new editorial address, RAILFAN & RAILROAD, P.O. Box 554, Andover, NJ 07821. If you use FedEx or UPS, send your package to RAILFAN & RAILROAD, 5 Lenape Road #554, Andover, NJ 07821. Clearly mark “Photo Line 2015” on the outside of the envelope. We’ll also be selecting the cover and PARTING
SHOT from the submissions, so be sure to include a few vertical shots for consideration. Don’t forget caption information and to key your captions to your file names or an identifying number on your slides. The easier it is to properly match your material, the better your chances are of getting selected. Good luck! — S.B.
Where is the Centerspread Contest? The Centerspread Contest traditionally
was in the December issue each year, but the 2014 contest slipped to the January 2015 issue last year during the transition to White River Productions. Since we’re moving Along the Rails to earlier in the year (it was traditionally in May, but will now be in March) we decided to spread out our primary two multi-contributor features by pushing the Centerspread Contest to later in the year. We’ll be announcing it as the time gets closer. Meanwhile, start digging through your shots from the past 12 months and get them in by January 12 for the Along the Rails feature. — S.B.
