Serenity and Scenery This variety is a big plus, but the long
wait time between trains is not, which is to say that no railfan visits Palouse Falls in search of nonstop action. The scenery is definitely a draw, as is the general atmosphere of peace and quiet. Coyotes and rattlesnakes outnumber humans by a lopsided margin in most of southeastern Washington, and the Ayer Sub feels as lonesome as any railroad in Montana or Wyoming. The only paved highway in the vicinity is lightly used state Route 261. The Palouse Falls State Park is at the end of a 2.5-mile gravel road that crosses the track on a short bridge, which provides the only view of the railroad that can be had from a
