THE SKINNY ON THE LATEST AND GREATEST

HAMMER: RED LEGEND SOLID 58.5 Hook 13.5 Length 13 Breakpoint Shape

Manufacturer’s Intent: “The Red Legend [March 2015] created amazing mid-lane and back-end continuation for bowlers of all styles,” says EBI Marketing Director, Rich Hanson. “The Red Legend Solid is designed to create the same overall ball motion with increased traction in oil, which makes it the perfect choice for those bowling on medium to heavy lane conditions.”

Core: The Gas Mask asymmetric core, from the Black Widow and Legend series, has a 2.50 RG, differential of .058 and intermediate differential of .016. We saw more than 5 inches of flare.

Coverstock: The Red Juiced solid cover comes out of the factory sanded with 500 and 2000 grit Abralon. The RA is 15.73 and the effective sur- face grit is 1590.

Overview: The solid version of the Legend line gives you a lot of hook right out of the box without any effort. On Stone Street, we had to move inside the third arrow and open up the midlane to the right. The Red Legend Solid was a few more boards hook than the Bad Intentions (March 2015) and picked up in the midlane about a foot earlier. This ball really reads the midlane well and continues with a strong forward roll through the pin deck. We were six boards far- ther right with our feet on this pattern than with the Red Legend Pearl, crossing 19 at the arrows, out to six- or seven-board at the 44-foot breakpoint. This ball was definitely too much for the light house pattern, as we had to play from around 25 at the arrows out to the 10-board at the breakpoint — a little too deep for our liking on this pattern. On the USBC team pattern, the

cover was way too strong, because we had to start too deep into the lane, making it difficult to get to the right breakpoint with our stronger layouts. A weaker layout like the 2.5 pin I used at El Paso would have made this a good first ball for us this year. This ball will be good to have in your arsenal for the longer and heavier volume patterns you may encounter. Rev-deprived and speed-dominant bowlers will fall in love with the Red Legend Solid, because this ball provides a lot of easy hook on the lanes. It nicely comple- ments the Legend line and the Bad Intentions.
