Mercedes first with PA crossbeam
ContiTech Vibration Control is producing what is claimed to be the first plastic transmis- sion crossbeam in a rear axle subframe for the latest Mercedes-Benz S-Class car. Produced in BASF’s
Ultramid A3WG10 PA, the load bearing injection moulded part provides a 25% weight saving over the previous die-cast aluminium support. It is used on the car maker’s all-wheel drive models. The BASF PA grade meets
all required static and dynamic loading requirements for the application. The plastic part is also said to offer improved acoustics and mechanical

performance over metal alternatives. It was developed using BASF’s Ultrasim simulation technology. “The new rear axle
transmission crossbeam is a milestone in the use of
polyamides in the chassis. It has the potential to set a new trend in the automotive industry,” says Kai Fruehauf, head of the ContiTech Vibration Control business unit. ❙
