Update | caps & closures Zeller takes coffee on the go

Nestle USA is using a custom-designed valved dispensing closure from Global Closure Systems subsidiary Zeller Plastik for its Coffee-Mate 2GO flavoured coffee creamer, which is targeted at North American coffee drinkers that like to take their preferred creamer with them. Coffee-Mate 2GO compris- es a 90ml package with a custom silicone-valve dispensing closure. It is manufactured at the Zeller Plastik plant at Libertyville in Illinois and incudes a bright

red glossy finish to enhance shelf appeal (tamper evident security is provided by a full body sleeve). “The silicone valve has been

specifically designed to perfectly match the product formulation,” says Peter Goshorn, Sales and Marketing Director, GCS Americas. According to Nestle, the

market for drinking coffee outside of the home continues to grow in North America. “Zeller Plastik’s collaboration on the cap development and

execution for Coffee-Mate 2GO helped us develop the perfect solution for the loyal Coffee- Mate consumer who needs a portable creamer”, says Cyrille Durand, Group Manager, Technical Packag- ing, Nestle USA. l In Europe, meanwhile, Global Closure Systems’ French subsidiary Astra Plastique has adapted its Jeroboam snap- hinge closure to package a range of own-brand automotive coolant and windscreen washer fluids for Carrefour. The French retailer was

searching for a closure that would allow simple glug-free pouring, something the Jero- boam achieves through the use of a rotatable pouring spout and splash-guard. ❙ www.gcs.com

Aproz presses on PCO1881

Swiss mineral water company Aproz Source Minerale has selected a new press-on flip-top closure from Bericap for packaging its syrups. The new HC EV 28/27 closure is designed for press-fitting to a PCO1881 lightweight neck finish. Aproz converted all still and carbonated mineral water bottles to this lightweight finish some time ago. Conversion of the syrup lines provides an additional resin saving and allows the company to concen- trate on a single neck specifica- tion for preform sourcing. The press-on HC EV 28/27

interbead band, which means the closure cannot be removed from the bottle without being destroyed, while a tear-off membrane assures integrity of the product. Both functions help ensure high safety against tampering. Other features of the design include a non-drip pouring lip. The HC EV 28/27

closure sits alongside Bericap’s EV 28/26 closure. The latter is also designed to press fit onto a PCO 1881 neck but offers an alternative screw cap finish.

l Also new from Bericap are the CTC IP29/19 and CTC IP29/20 closures for the edible oil market. The company says the new two-piece closures, which offer one-thumb opening and

closing, are designed to offer a premium appearance without sacrificing function- ality or cleanliness. Features include the option of left or right-hand tamper

evident band release, integrated marguerite flow control, and non-drip lip.

NB runs closure mould trials

Italian machinery maker Negri Bossi recently completed a mould trial for an un-named European manufacturer of flip top closures, running a 32-cavity mould in a servo-hydraulic Canbio V220-850 moulding machine producing and assembling the 74g PP parts on a cycle time of around 10s.

The machine was equipped with a Sytrama S9-S robot and a GD92CU downstream automation system from Giuseppe Desirò, which assembled, welded and packaged the parts in banks of 8. Negri Bossi says the Italian automation company is a specialist in systems for as- sembly of complex closures and has a proven track record in the food, house- hold and pharmaceutical industry. Other recent cap system

projects completed by the Italian machinery maker include a 24-cavity closure production system for Italian company Capsol. The production system, built around an accumulator- supported Janus 210-850 hybrid injection moulding machine, produces 35mm diameter 2.6g HDPE closures on a cycle time of around 5.5s. ❙ www.negribossi.comwww.giuseppedesiro.it
