learned how to handle defensive-minded foes even better this year. “It’s made him a better wrestler because he has to work hard to get to them,” Terry Brands said. “This is by far the best shape he’s ever been in cardiovascular-wise.” Metcalf also has diversified his offensive attacks to keep his block-happy opponents off-balance. “I feel good,” he said. “My offense is really clicking right now. My finishes are right there. I just have little things to work on like hand fighting, positioning and turns on top.” Metcalf, a two-time NCAA champion and Hodge Trophy win- ner for Iowa, remains as determined and focused as ever to reach his goals.
He remains confident he can be standing on top of the World podium.
That day very well could be when he steps on the mat to compete at the World Championships on Sept. 10. His first three trips to Worlds were in Russia, Turkey and Uzbekistan.
This time he will be competing in his home country, at The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
So what does Metcalf have to do to change his fortunes this year?
“Here’s the thing: My results have proven I can do it, so I know I can do it. It’s time to do it,” Metcalf said. “I’m there. I know I’m there.
“This is an opportunity – a great opportunity. I can’t waste it this time.”
