He fully understands how important the next two years are with the 2015 Worlds being held in Las Vegas in September and the 2016 Olympics next year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. When Metcalf came out of college, he was considered one of this country’s top prospects in freestyle along with a guy named Jordan Burroughs, who has won an Olympic gold medal and two World titles at 74 kg/163 lbs. Burroughs learned and developed early in his college career after suffering a pair of setbacks to Metcalf in 2008. Now they train together and have been teammates on the last three U.S. World Teams. “Brent Metcalf’s a stud,” Burroughs said. “He is fully capa- ble of being the best guy in the World. He is wrestling at a really high level and there is no doubt in my mind he can win a World title. It’s just a matter of putting it all together.” Metcalf continues to progress. He’s a wrestler that foreign competitors are well aware of and one that many are intimidated by because of his mas- sive gas tank.


American and foreign foes wrestle defensively against Metcalf, but he has proven this year that he is difficult to slow down. Rule changes in 2013 also have made freestyle wrestling higher-scoring and faster-paced, which caters to Metcalf’s high-octane approach.
