York working as a fashion designer. He then studied with Fong Chow, curator of Far Eastern Art at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, which led to his new career in ceramics.


Vanderveen expanded his work to sculptural forms that were widely exhibited, including a one-person show at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. In 1986, he began his highly respected series of bronze animal sculptures that are his hallmark.


Each sculpture exemplifies his ability to capture the essence of an animal. Vanderveen could translate into a solid form the movement and spirit of nature,

enhancing the subtle interactions between animals or the beauty of a solitary figure. His choice of particular patinas and polished finishes to highlight various elements helped to bring each piece of life. The sophisticated and graceful forms brought him respect and wide recognition. He continued to work daily in his studio until his passing.


Loet Vanderveen’s works will continue to be shown and collected at Exclusive Collections Galleries, as the artist made sure that his creations would continue to be cast posthumously. Although he is physically gone, his spirit will forever remain in his art and love for the animals he honored through his work.
