hen we observe the world around us, nature can seem patterned and random simultaneously, from the ordered bark of a tree and its leaves, to the chaotic swell of the ocean. For the things that seem disordered or beyond our knowledge, we apply an idea of reason or pattern in order to better understand them.

“My work is influenced by applied structure, and how we as humans use it as a lens to view the world around us,” Daniel Ryan explains. He builds complex designs using accentuated patterns that use the fundamentals of shape,

line, value, and texture to articulate his subject matter, whether that be landscapes, seascapes, or animals.

Ryan’s creative process has changed dramatically in the

last year, as a departure from strictly painting has opened up new opportunities for experimentation. Making a shift to pen and ink drawings has allowed for less focus on color and more attention to details in line and shape.

Ryan utilizes a tedious illustration method called stippling, which is the grouping of small dots or objects
