letter from the publisher

year publishing anniversary—and here we are—publishing the 181st

15th S edition! And speaking of publishing, what I learned

in May was so compelling that I hope the information will stay among us, not short-term

but long-term, and spread worldwide. Natural Awakenings can play an essential part. From May 22-31, I fortunately was able to attend a 10-Day (unheard of T-E-N day) free health conference in Orlando. Twenty-Nine (29!) internationally-known authors/ fi lm directors/activists spoke and offered panel Q&A each evening. (Details and free replays will be available at www. therealtruthabouthealthconference.com) Still glowing from the conference, I learned so much—and, mostly, was reminded why a plant-based diet is essential to our global health and my own. If you believe that “Ignorance is Bliss,” read no further. I believe that simple truths are Bliss. You’ll fi nd many trustworthy facts within these pages to lead you to health without pharmaceutical drugs. The very simplest truth: You are what you eat. And, I add: You are what you think. Period.

Quote of the month (post on your fridge): “If it came from a plant, EAT IT.

If it was made in a plant, DON’T!” ~Michael Pollan

Please don’t be fooled, like I was years ago. From my local health food store, I drank the brand: Vitamin Water. Trusting the big outer label, I bought it for 6 months. Yikes! When I actually read the label (sugar and no vitamins), I became determined from then on: use magnifying eyeglass readers for the small print/deceptive labeling. Of course, when I see children drinking that Cola brand stuff like Vitamin Water, I cringe. PLEASE read the labels! Especially look for dangers in most processed food (i.e. High Fructose Corn Syrup and Trans-fats and words you cannot pronounce). Yikes again, no wonder we Americans have epidemic, so-called “incurable” diseases. Don’t buy into “incurable” either! See pp 13-15. Whew, on a lighter note….the way Summer is meant to be:

Check out the Teeny Tiny Vacation ideas (p.32). I was quickly reminded of a home-made backyard fort I and my 3 sisters played & camped in under our orange tree. Those days were silly and fun—no fear of bugs/snakes/etc. I’m glad to share that we, adults, still appreciate those simple, easy ways. Let’s teach our younger generation: life outside—away from cells phones, technology—is a very happy place to be. Keep planting your healthy seeds (fertilizing with positive thoughts), and water them daily.

Happy Growing this summer— and onward, upward…
