Tried & Tested: Shanghai Ritz-Carton Pudong

The Ritz-Carlton Pudong has a lot going for it, including a super location surrounded by designer boutiques and shopping malls in the Lujiazui business district. Spacious and stylish, its rooms are kitted out with Chinese silks, graphic bronze panelling and copper slipper bathtubs and it boasts two fabulous restaurants – the cool but casual Italian Scena and the romantic Jin Xuan, while an ESPA spa and pool tower above the city on the 53rd floor. But the real kicker here is the jaw-dropping rooftop bar, Flair. Designed by Japanese design darlings Super Potato, the vertiginous space seems to cling to the side of the building and has one of the best views of any bar in the world, facing out on to the landmark Oriental Pearl Tower, the meandering Huangpu River and the sentry-like architecture of The Bund. Rooms: 285 rooms from £315pn, room only. Tel: 0086 21 2020 1888, ritzcarlton.com

The Peninsula

Welcome to Gatsby-esque levels of glam on The Bund. From the string quartet in the lobby, to the day-long wellness rituals taking place in the spa, no detail has been left to chance at this impressive hotel. Rooms combine classy sumptuous furnishings with technology that Nasa would be more than proud of. Swipe your hand over the control panel and you can light up the Murano glass chandeliers, open the silk curtains, download movies and travel guides, play games and even check the times of local flight arrivals. The service provided is discreet and efficient, and there is no shortage of amenities, with six restaurants and bars, a Princess 54 yacht, a gym, an indoor pool and a spa sure to keep you occupied – and that’s not to mention the wealth of delights of Shanghai’s historic Bund neighbourhood right there on the doorstep. Rooms: 235 from £264pn, room only. Tel: 0086 21 2327 2888, peninsula.com

Mandarin Oriental Pudong Shanghai

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to hear that service at the Mandarin Oriental Pudong is flawless. And as you would expect from this brand, the design is pretty darn hot too, merging classic Chinese styling with plenty of contemporary twists. Rooms are sophisticated spaces with big goose-y beds, spa bathrooms and floor-to-ceiling windows from which to admire the sparkling city views. The hotel’s four fabulous restaurants and hip Qi Bar are also big draws, but the jewel in the MO’s crown has got to be its spa; 2,415 square metres of total indulgence, decked out with pools and steam rooms, tepidarium chairs and saunas, aroma experience showers and ice fountains, as well as 13 gold-toned treatment rooms, mani-pedi stations and a tea lounge. Rooms: 362 rooms from £241pn, B&B. Tel: 0086 21 2082 9888, mandarinoriental.com
