THAILAND
Phuket's Vegetarian Festival might sound a little dull but this nine-day commitment to abstinence and purity is not for the faint hearted. Devotees parade through the streets, some having driven swords, spears, metal tubes and all manner of sharp objects through their cheeks and other body parts The mutilation is supposed to draw the evil spirits of others onto themselves and bring the community good luck.

Sziget is one of Europe's most famous music festivals and takes place August 10-17 this year with acts like Florence and the Machine, Paloma Faith, Ellie Goulding and Kasabian taking to the stage on the Danube River island of Óbudai-sziget in the heart of Budapest. There's also plenty of homegrown talent and gypsy music, and strange interactive art.
