Hilton Head Island H

South Carolina

ilton Head Island has always had British connections, going back to 1663 when English sea captain William Hilton sailed from Barbados into Port Royal Sound. He sighted an oak tree-covered headland he described as “that f’ayre land", promptly claiming it for the British crown and naming it ‘Hilton’s Head'. An account of his exploration, published in 1664, attracted early British settlers to Hilton Head Island. These days, it’s the sandy beaches and ideal location, between the historic cities of Savannah, Georgia and Beaufort and Charleston in South Carolina, which draws the crowds.
