Variety is the spice of summer & on location

TANZANIA TO TURKEY With the two four-day weeks already something

of a distant memory, it looks like my busy year is set to continue with bookings coming from all directions and for a huge range of destinations. This last month has seen me

book a couple of girls to Magaluf, a family of six on a 10-day Tanzanian tailor-made safari and beach stay, and Turkey for a couple of elderly ladies, along with the usual array of fl ights and couples’ holidays near and far. I attended a very nice evening

of training, networking and eating recently, courtesy of Somak Holidays and South Africa Tourism. These evenings are of immense importance to agents and I hope that all tourist offi ces and specialist operators continue to include them in their marketing budgets. I cannot believe how fast the summer is approaching, and, the way my clients have been booking so early this year, I wonder if there will be any holidays left for the late bookers! One of the great things about this business is that you never know what is around the corner and this becomes more marked when you work for yourself from home. Those quieter periods are the time to get out and network.

LONDON OR SAINT LUCIA? I recently spent a day touring London, a belated birthday treat from my daughter on a lovely sunny day. We started by walking through Kensington Gardens. It wasn’t the sunshine that made me think I was somewhere tropical, it was a colourful noisy parrot that fi rst appeared above us at the Peter Pan memorial. It made me smile and think of Saint Lucia. As part of my never-ending quest to stay in lots of lovely UK places, my husband and

I recently had a sneaky two-night break in East Sussex at a lovely old manor house called Prawles Court. It was gorgeous and as its only guests we had a lovely, relaxing and quiet time. East Sussex certainly has lovely countryside, with old village greens and nice cosy country pubs. It couldn’t be more different to London! E: Barbara.Charltontravelcounsellors.com T: 01293 737290

A West African winner

THE Gambia Experience's 'Win a Holiday for Two Every Week' incentive has proved a big hit amongst agents, showing that this small West African nation is most certainly in demand. Here's what the fi rst winners made of their own Gambia Experience.

Penny Bones, owner of Southern Cross Travel, Wadhurst (East Sussex)

“It was a wonderful surprise, winning the holiday and

experiencing it! I had no idea

The Gambia was so beautiful – the place, the people, the food, the birds, the beach... It has been such a great

opportunity to learn all about this gem of West Africa! “My best experience was the bird- watching expedition, by road and dugout canoe. "We saw over 40 different varieties of

bird, watched the oyster ladies working at their harvest and paddled through the mangroves. The next time we visit it will be for two weeks so that we will have more time to enjoy not just the beach but the other excursions on offer.”

Karin Bessent, Branch Manager, Travelplanners, Southsea (Hampshire) “Being a relatively short fl ight with no time difference, we were soon soaking

up 30-degree temperatures and watching the surf on the lovely Kotu beach – and enjoying good food. "We found it so easy to experience the

country's cultural aspects, such as the vibrant local markets. It's easy to join one of the many available tours and there are also plenty of guides around who are happy to take tourists out and about at very little cost. “I can now see why The Gambia is a

top winter sun destination. It’s so affordable and friendly, which is why it’s called the ‘Smiling Coast’. If you want to meet happy people and have a relaxed sunny holiday then The Gambia is the place to book – I’ll defi nitely be back!”
