UK’s leading educational multimedia resources


By Helen Fit on British Universities Film & Video Council Nominations for the Learning on Screen awards have now been announced. Organised annually by the British Universities Film & Video Council (BUFVC), Learning on Screen is the only UK awards celebrating media production in learning, teaching and research, now in its 11th year. The awards champion student fi lm


productions, resources produced in- house by educational institutions and curriculum-focused content, as well as traditional educational broadcast productions, the award for which this year is sponsored by post-production house Fifty Fifty. Those leading the way in producing new and innovative online resources are recognised in our Educational Multimedia category. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the types of


resources entered into our multimedia award have changed remarkably in recent years, as new technologies have emerged and user expectations have developed, especially in terms of resource interactivity and user experience. New technologies, including hand-held devices, apps, e-books, and improvements in game and animation creation, are now being used to create innovative and imaginative educational resources that can be used to educate learners, from pre-school to university level and beyond. This year’s four nominated educational


multimedia entries include: an online teaching package for undergraduate students and trainee police offi cers on public protection issues; a selection of short fi lms, online resources and teaching packs centred on Commonwealth values; a multi-platform initiative about classical music and creativity; and an interactive website presenting Jewish stories of migration, anti-fascism and family. Facebook game to engage international students


Corporation Pop has developed a game for Facebook and Sina Weibo to engage students in South Korea, Nigeria and China with NCUK programmes as a route to a UK degree. Success is a retro-styled match-3


game with a twist – against the clock, players match three shapes in a row to clear the path through a grid, enabling them to proceed to the next level. Themed around the path that


international students take to study at a UK university – from fi rst becoming interested in study abroad to graduating and starting work – each level provides information on how NCUK can help them. Players can choose to play English, Korean


or Chinese versions and share scores through social networks, which can also be entered on a leaderboard. The game has been developed using


HTML5 and JavaScript to ensure that it can be played across all major smartphones and modern browsers without the need to download. As ‘success’ will be discovered through social sharing, Corporation Pop has developed versions for both Facebook and China’s most popular social
