Franziska Haas, Business Development Manager for Campus Living Villages,
discusses the changing demands from international students
ACCOMMODATING INTERNATIONAL STUDY
Q. How has the CLV product range developed in recent months?
Last year, CLV made a significant investment in the UK market, purchasing a portfolio of 4,539 beds across the UK. The investment has increased our UK student room numbers from 3,807 beds to 8,727 beds, across 11 properties. As a result of CLV’s expansion, we have also established new relationships with a wealth of institutions, working in partnership with Leeds Becket, Leeds University, Birmingham City University (BCU), Birmingham University, Notingham University, University of South Wales, Greenwich University, Trinity Laban, Bellerby’s and Liverpool John Moores. In addition to these new sites, we also
finalised two further projects, with the Royal College of Music and St Andrew’s University, both prestigious establishments. The University of St. Andrews will welcome 324 state-of-the-art student bedrooms for the beginning of the 2015/16 academic year, while the agreement with the Royal College of Music is to build, own and operate Prince Consort Village a 417-bed state-of-the art new development in West London, which will include purpose built facilities for music students including practice rooms and acoustically treated bedrooms.
Q. How many students can you facilitate at any one time, and what percentage are domestic/international?
Currently CLV has a portfolio of 8,727 beds in the UK, with an additional 2,108 currently in development through new properties being built. Within the UK, CLV accommodates a mix of nationalities
throughout the academic year – around 40- 50% are international students. In the summer holidays CLV
accommodates mainly language school students who are primarily European, but an increase in bookings from South America, China and Middle Eastern countries has also been noticed. Over the last few years a decline in summer bookings from some Europeans has been witnessed, although this is still CLV’s primary summer market. The European economy as a whole
has played a large part in the decline of students from the EU. In addition, visa restrictions implemented by the UK government in 2014 have also contributed to the reduction of international students from outside of the EU staying in our facilities. These restrictions require the student to show that they have at least £800 per month available to support living costs, which may be unatainable for some. The British Council
A huge benefit of staying in CLV accommodation is the social life and student experience that comes along with it. Not only does CLV offer a place to live, it also aims to offer an enriched student lifestyle throughout the stay. Flat sharing plays a part in this. Many international students often request to be accommodated with students from other countries, in order to improve their language skills and learn about different cultures. The English Language students, in particular, prefer this type of accommodation when staying in the UK. Another benefit of staying in residential

accommodation is the ease of transition it provides the students. CLV offers an all-inclusive package, where all additional fees, such as utility bills and Internet are included; making the process of organising and paying for accommodation simplified and efficient. International students also tend to opt in for added value services, such as receiving help with seting up a bank account and airport transfers, which all help to make the transition to
a new country stress free. CLV also offers the V Store, designed to

provide students with all the ‘essential’ items they need when living away from home, such as bedding packs and kitchen utensils. Items can be pre-purchased from the shop ahead of arrival and will be waiting for each student in their room when they arrive, ensuring a warm welcome for the new resident. UB
