Protein Chromatography Workstation
The Arista Slice protein purifi cation system from Practichem (Morrisville, N.C.) facilitates collaborative, web- based method development and can be operated from Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android platforms simultaneously. Web-based access enables remote interaction, without software or license issues, and allows scientists to operate the instrument and view and share results. The 22-cm-wide, front-access instrument runs
affi nity, anion exchange, HIC, gel fi ltration, desalting, partition and adsorption techniques and includes integral pumps, valves and collector. The built-in BioDetector with twin LED probe detects proteins, peptides, DNA and buff er concentration.
Viscometers, Rheometers, Texture Analyzers and Drying Columns
DRIERITE (Xenia, Ohio) provides drying columns with indicators that dry air and gases to a dewpoint of –100 °F. The desiccant within the vessel changes color from blue to pink to indicate exhaustion. Several types of column fittings are available.
Powder Flow Testers Catalog The 2015 full-color catalog from Brookfi eld Engineering Laboratories (Middleboro, Mass.) introduces the DV1 economical sensing digital viscometer. Also included are enhancements to the RST rheometer for quick, automatic gap setting on cone/plate models, and several new and improved texture fi xtures for measuring tablet strength, cheese stringiness and hair combability.
Neural Transfection Reagent
DNA-In Neuro from AMSBIO (Cambridge, Mass.) is a transfection reagent developed specifi cally for maximum nucleic acid delivery into neurons, typically achieving a twofold or greater improvement in effi ciency over currently available reagents. The
reagent off ers researchers a cost-eff ective, robust and easy-to-use DNA delivery solution for transfecting freshly isolated and cryopreserved neurons. It reproducibly transfects neurons and neural stem cells at optimal effi ciency with very low toxicity to support uncompromised post-transfection assays.
Protocols for Culturing Primary Cells to Speed Platform for Drugs-of-Abuse Testing
The Viva-ProE system with EMIT technology from Siemens Healthcare (Tarrytown, N.Y.) is a drug-testing platform designed to meet the productivity, workfl ow and workspace needs of mid- volume laboratories. The compact, benchtop system has a capacity for 50 sample positions and 12 auxiliary positions and can run up to 133 EMIT tests per hour. The consolidated drug-testing menu includes drugs-of-abuse and validity testing, serum toxicology and therapeutic and immunosuppressant drug monitoring.
Biological Discoveries CHI Scientifi c, Inc. (Maynard, Mass.) off ers PrimaCell protocols for culturing more than 300 types of primary cells, which will enable scientists to overcome the variability of experimental results derived from individualized, time-consuming procedures. These bench-proven protocols developed for PrimaCell cell culture systems can be used by research scientists to grow cells directly from tissue or organs for research on biology and drug discovery. The PrimaCell kit is a standardized cell culture system optimized to be cell- and tissue-specifi c for the selected species and tissue. It includes all of the premade reagents required for tissue preparation, optimized tissue dissociation, isolation and proliferation of the desired cells.
