die that allows pipe diameter to be changed automati- cally. It recently won a repeat order for the technology from Belgian pipe and cable manu- facturer Kabelwerk Eupen – which will use it to make HDPE pipe.

Kabelwerk, a leading European extruder of pipe and cable, has placed another order for QuickSwitch, and will use it to extrude HDPE pipe of 160-250mm diameter. In addition, a KME 38-30 coextruder and an outer layer adapter are being used to retrofi t the existing line with the 160mm diameter range.

“Receiving a follow-up order shows the market- leading position of QuickSwitch – in terms of attaining the highest fl exibility and product quality,” said Jens Liebhold, head of extrusion technology at KraussMaffei Technologies.

Other KM Berstorff extrusion equipment on show at NPE 2015 include a KME 60 XS single-screw extruder, the KM-3L RKW 74-250 IPC spiral distributor and a C6 control unit.

Meanwhile, among the many products showcased by

Krauss Maffei Berstorff will show its QuickSwitch system, an adjustable pipe die that allows pipe diameter to be changed automatically during production

PSI-Polymer Systems at NPE 2015 is its Quick-Shift Die Changer. PSI’s new hydraulic die changer (HDC) uses a quick-shift slide plate to exchange die heads on a single extruder. The system is ideally suited for lines that must be purged during die changeovers, or for batch operations where reduced changeover times translate directly to increased output and cost savings for waste and labour reductions. The device provides a pre-heat zone for the new die and uses a hydraulic power unit to shift the die online, effectively reducing changeover times from 1 hour to 1 minute. Designed for tight spaces, the current model will accept 12in and 18in annular dies. Custom versions are available for virtually any extrusion process, such as pipe and profi le, where dies are routinely changed out.

Cool performance Conair will help visitors to keep their cool, with a number of product introductions.

Its ESE series EarthSmart central chillers are designed to meet immediate process require- ments, but allow for future expansion: users can install one or more chillers, and then add more modules up to a total of six for a cooling

capacity up to 960 tonnes. Up to 12 refrigeration

circuits can be connected to a single control interface using twisted-pair wiring, for centralised control of all chiller circuits. Systems can be water cooled, using tower water, or installed in a remote-air-cooled condenser confi guration.

At the same time, its EarthSmart adiabatic cooling

towers can help plastics processors to reduce water and energy consumption and prevent contamination of process fl uid, while maintaining stable fl uid tempera- tures even in hot weather. Process fl uid circulates in a closed loop through tubing in the tower, so is isolated from contamination and evaporation. The tubing is positioned behind adiabatic panels. As ambient air passes through the wetted panels, water evaporates, reducing the temperature of the air fl owing into the unit so that it cools the process fl uid. The company offers 11 models to handle nominal

fl ow rates from as little as 45 gallons/min (170 litres/ min) up to 510 gallons/min (1930 litres/min) of process fl uid (35% ethylene glycol).

Buying, not selling One exhibitor, Arlington Plastics Machinery, says it will be more focused on buying than selling at the show – where it will be offering free evaluations of processing equipment. When looking to buy new equipment, Arlington says

that companies fi rst need to ask themselves what their current equipment is worth. At NPE 2015, it will give on-the-spot offers. The company likens the process ‘trading in’ when buying a new car. Many visitors to NPE will want to incorporate the

latest technology from the show into their production processes. This means that – at some point – they will need to manage the process of switching from their old machine to the new one.
