Opportunities in Orlando
Florida is a huge draw for tourists, with attractions such as Walt Disney World pulling in the crowds. For a week in March, a new type of visitor will arrive – but one who is more interested in polypropylene than Mickey Mouse. Because Florida – specifi cally the Orange County
Convention Center in Orlando – will host the NPE plastics exhibition again this year. The show, which runs from 23 to 27 March is organised by the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI). There are the usual staggering statistics: 1 million
square feet of fl oor space and more than 2,000 exhibi- tors, for example. But there are many other features, including: 20 themed technology pavilions – examples include Flexible Vinyl and Fluoropolymers; a Zero Waste

Zone, with information on recycling; and, for the fi rst time a showcase of new, innovative plastics companies called Startup Garage. With so many technologies on show, this preview can
only scratch the surface. This is a short selection of some of the highlights of interest to pipe and profi le manufac- turers. More details will be featured in our next issue.
Polymer protection In materials, Teknor Apex will present a new polymer alloy technology that will allow it to custom-formulate ‘capstock’ grades – coextrusion compounds that protect the surface of products like external PVC profi les. The technology was originally developed by building
products specialist Viking Polymers, which was acquired by Teknor last year. It is available in colours
ranging from basic outdoor white to an assortment of very dark shades. In addition to the integrated Viking products, Teknor offers compounds that produce a variegated
surface, with toners that provide a rich natural undertone and ‘streakers’ that impart a realistic
